I'm having trouble downloading files from CIS with NComm. The XPR for
QuickB doesn't seem to work properly. Does anyone have any idea what could
be wrong? (I have the registered version of NComm.) Thanx in advance for

Hi, Nancy; in a way, I am glad to hear you are having this problem, because
I am as well and was beginning to wonder whether the fault was mine. I take
it you are using Version 2? Earlier versions worked fine for me. I have
managed to contact the author in Norway by E-mail, whose somewhat laconic
reply was that he had not been able to test the CompuServe QuickB code but
would try to put matters right with the next version! I've concluded by
trial and error that selecting the "CompuServe-B" protocol option NEVER
works but using QuickB set up as an external protocol will work, on
average, once every 4-5 tries. If it fails just wait for 20 sec or so for
the handshake to fail and a system error message to be sent and then try
again until you lock on. Do NOT try sending a break because that freezes
everything, I find, and one has to log off and restart from scratch. Pity;
I am thinking of dropping NComm and using something else. Hope this helps.
If you manage to get round the problem some better way, please let me know.

My temporary solution: Logon to CIS with Baud Bandit; use NComm for
everything else. (Actually, I should get around to learning WHAP! for CIS
access. Maybe this will be my motivator….Thanx for the reply….. Nancy

Yes, I think you are right, although I am considering a new German Comms.
program called Term, rather than BB. I have also thought about Whap! Is it
worth it? So you are Canadian? I like what I've seen of the country, but I
have only really seen Ottawa, with the odd trip across the canal to Hull,
besides interminable waits at the airports at Montreal and Toronto.
Alberta, I expect, is very different?

The only cost to try Whap! is the download time. Using Whap! in lieu of
doing things 'live' online, should reduce your CIS online charges
significantly. If you like the program and want the registered version
which enables some things like retrieval of messages marked 'TO YOU', and
some directory flexibility, the additional cost is only $39.95.
Try it… you'll like it!

What do you think of Term? I downloaded it at the same time as NComm, but
liked NComm so much I never tried it. This is also the case with Whap!
I've faithfully downloaded every update and have NEVER, NEVER tried it.
That time is coming, tho'. RE – Canada….The West is very different from
the East. BC is spectacular, and Vancouver is, I think, the loveliest city
in the world. Edmonton, however, can hold its own in the beauty
department. We're on a river – the city has developed on both banks – so
there are lots of bridges. The whole river valley is parkland, and there
are lots of other parks – enough to give Edmonton the highest ratio of
parkland per capita of any city in the world. In the summer, we have lots
and lots of festivals: food, street performers, drama, folk, etc., etc.
(Naturally, the summer weather is beautiful.) And – we have a solid Amiga
user base and a good, active user group. (Oh, and then there's the
infamous West Edmonton Mall, too, which has given birth to numerous parts
on my computer plus lots of software)….Thanks for the response. You'll
notice another NComm query from me on this base. (Perhaps I should have
held on to my $35 a bit longer.)…..Nancy
Thank you for your reply, Nancy, Edmonton sounds fine; hope to see it some
day. I haven't managed to get Term to work; seems I have'nt enough memory
(2 Megs but some of this is taken by some utilities run in background).
I'll try Whap when I can download it.
Incidentally, can't help you with your daughter's and son's-in-law
configuration problem; I use an ordinary 2000HD and have never had any
problems getting NComm to run. Back to our downloading difficulties with
CompuServe-B; I also find that I cannot get Version 2.0 to download to any
device other than my NComm assign. With the previous version, it would
download to a floppy or a recoverable Ram drive device, just by preceding
the file name with the logical device name, but with NComm 2.0 the latter
gets stripped off somehow. Does this happen to you or have you found an
answer?

I have WB 2.04 and Ncomm 1.92 and have never been able to get it to dial my
modem, even though the program comes up OK and obviously recognizes that
the modem is there. I haven't had this problem with JRComm or Online
