2.04 HD Backup Problems

I'm trying to use the hd backup provided with 2.04, and I assigned my boot
partition to WORK. For some reason or another I keep getting DIRECTORY
ERRORS after a backup is complete. I have a GVP A500HD+ and neither of my
partions is named WORK or WB2.04. Why the directory errors? Angel
If you are using HDBackup, that is the problem – it does not work
properly. You need to either use BRU directly from the shell or buy a third
party backup program.
On using BRU:
First, increase the stack to 25000. Then make the partition you want to
back up your current directory. Enter: bru -e ;estimates the number of
floppies required
bru -c ;backs up the partition
bru -x ;restores the partition

or so.

Edward, in what way does HDBackup fail to work properly? I have only
recently upgraded to WB2.04 and so far I have only taken the one back-up,
using HDBackup. It seemed to work OK, except I noticed it miscounted the
number of floppies I was using by one, around disk no. 13 or thereabouts.
Any other problems? I want to be certain before risking re-formatting my
hard disk.

Don't reformat that drive!! HDBackup is a piece of junk. It cost me my
entire boot partition. I havn't talked to anyone yet that has actualy got
it to work.

HDBackup looks like it is working properly when doing a backup but
almost everyone who has used it has had at least some trouble when trying
to restore from it. I was able to restore after reformatting but only after
quite a bit of trial and error. Others have not been as lucky. My best
advice would be to buy a commercial backup program and delete HDBackup.

HDBackup does not work consistantly. I made a test backup of a small
directory to get the hang of it, then backed up the drive and reformatted.
It did not restore. Fortunately, I had had the drive less than a week and I
still had most of it still scattered about on floppis; rebuilding the boot
partition did not take too many hours.
Minor probs:
toggling compression does nothing
" archive bits does nothing
Annoying prob:
I would often get a 'Not a DOS disk in df0:' requester when placing a
backup floppy in the drive.
Fatal prob:
When restoring, the program seemed to 'lose' files, after which it would
go through the remaining discs without restoring any more files.
BRU seems to have worked so far, but I'm waiting for Quarterback to arrive.

Many thanks; also to Darren and Dennis who told me much the same. I
shall not touch HDBackup with a barge-pole, as we say in England! I used to
use a very good PD backup program called MR-Backup, but the latest version
does not run with WB2.04. Quaterback should be the answer, if it is due out
soon.
