#Unix: how good?

I am interested in getting UNIX for my Amiga 3000, but I am curious as
to how good it really is. How does it compare with a Sun? I want more
software support for my Amiga and I'm not sure to turn my machine into a
mac, ibm, or unix compatible.

If you use "Open Look" or "X-Windows" you are likely to be a bit
dissapointed with the machine's response speed. Particularly if you are
accustomed to the AmigaDOS window response. I have not seen a SUN in quite
a few years but I know that the HP boxes that I have seen recently are
quite a bit faster than the Amiga. I have used several DOS-Windows
machines that were slower than the Amiga-Unix box.
File system response seems to be reasonable (particularly network
response). This Amiga is networked to an Amiga 3000UX. I can not tell the
difference between network and attached drive response for moderate sized
files (around 50K). Also, directory commands seem to run faster over the
network than on the Amiga itself. -bill
The best way to find out is to go to a dealer that has the UX and try it
out. Early versions of the UX software had an X-Window implementation
which was slow, but people report the later versions are much quicker.
Also, the SunOS that you're used to will be different from System V Release
4 but you'll have to mess around with it to see how big of a problem this
will be for you.
