Does anyone have any experiences with CD ROMS for UNIX.
I have heard of several CD ROMs which contain Public Domian/Shareware for
UNIX and would like to find out more info.

With the new Rock Ridge extensions which all for full UNIX filenames,
symbolic links, unix permissions and directory levels greater than 8 and
still IS0-9660 compliant.
It should be getting quite a bit of support .. SUN's OS already has Rock
Ridge extensions, and many of the UNIX vendors are just coming out with
related drivers too. Its been accepted by POSIX, IEEE and FIPS and
hopefully soon Rock Ridge will also be an ISO standard.
Most of the UNIX cd-roms are either ISO-9660 or an image of a UNIX hard
disk.
Any idea if there are Rock Ridge extensions in the works for A/UX? I hear
that they both put their extensions in the same area, so one precludes the
other. I am trying to get the GNU4 CD-ROM going under A/UX, so I must solve
this problem.
The Rock Ridge extensions fit into the scheme of ISO-9660 CD-ROM. Basically
they fit into the directory records system use fields. The only thing you
really need is a driver that can read rock ridge extensions. You can still
should be able to read the CD-ROM drive under A/UX if A?UX has a cd-rom
driver for it. The problems come from relocated deep 'directories since
ISO limits it to 8 levels (another MS-DOS limit) but it should still work
but everything may not be in the same place.

Walnut creek cdrom (1800 786 9907) has two unix discs. One disc contains
the comp.sources archives — 600 megabytes of source code. Most of the
source is unix-C; there is also about 70 meg of msdos mixed source. The
other disc is the complete Gnu/x11r5 distribution. This disc has
precompiled sparcstation binaries. Each disc is $39.95, iso9660, and
guaranteed.

The GNU4 CD-ROM from Young Minds (714-335-1350) for $49.95 has all of the
Gnu software, and X Windows (X11R5). Gnu, for those not familiar, is source
code for their C compiler, G++ (C++), Gnu SED, Gawk (awk), and many other
Unix tools. All freeware, which means it's not public domain, but it's
free.
537 meg. ISO 9660, with Rock Ridge extensions, Portable File System.
This will not run under A/UX, however. I'm working on that.
