I am investigating the new CD-Recorders from JVC, Phillips, and Sony. Has
anyone out there ever used these products before? In the May 12 issue of
PC Mag, there is a brief article on these drives but no numbers were given
on whom to contact about these drives from JVC and Phillips. Has anyone
ever been in contact with JVC and Phillips? If so, would you please give me
the numbers? Thanks

Sorry to be late on this, but have you used the new Philips cutter?
Even discounting the vendor hype I got at SIGCAT, $10000 (including 3rd
party software and a 680 meg disk) is a lot nicer price than $13000. And
some of the 3rd party SW vendor claims also appeared to be significant as
well.

Well, yes. You could get the Phillips for $10,000, but then you also get
three vendors to deal with instead of one (Phillips, whatever software
company, whatever hard drive supplier). My past experience says it's
better to support with a sole source than piece-mealing. Sixteen years in
the computer industry has taught me this. Besides, JVC's technical support
is FAR beyond any other vendor's I've dealt with. To me, as a mastering
facility, I don't have time to waste negotiating whose equipment fault it
is. That is the main reason I went with JVC gear. I don't need the
headaches just to save a few bucks. Now, if I were a small operation
looking to cut costs, the 2 or 3,000 dollar difference might persuade me,
but I doubt it, for if I were trying to grow a business and reputation
(which I have done, by the way), I wouldn't want my image tarnished as far
as delivery of product to my potential customers. Back to the same
lesson…. oh well, maybe I should write an article. Of course these
opinions are my own from my viewpoint as a write-once producer and
mastering facility manager.

Philip,
SIGCAT (Special Interest Group, Cdrom Applications & Technology) is
a (primarily government) CDROM users group. Mostly librarians and database
types, not "home" applications.
We made a lot of good contacts for our data capture operation there.
