Yes, there is a virus problem in the Amiga world, but not nearly to the extent of the PC world. A utility called "KV" can detect certain kinds of viruses that are attached to executable files. Most of the other viruses are BOOT BLOCK virusY.O8nd those are usually only in files which are complete disk images. As for whether or not the Internet community would have found any viruses, yes I would think so. I've retrieved things from the /incoming directory and never had a problem from there either. Perhaps you can get an Amiga person to classify that /incoming directory for you? I've heard a couple of people mention they'd like to get some of the files which were in incoming. Steve

Well, There are a few more sneaky viruses, but LVD (link Virus Detector) can tell you about those…. My favorite Amiga Virus Checker in VirusChecker 6.05, which I think is in the libs somewhere. A nice friendly 2.04 commodity….. That _does_ run in a 1.3 <shudder> environment. Brian – via Whap!

If the ab20 disc sells, then we'll upgrade the disc. A site in switzerland is going to take over the internet amiga archiving functions, and in a couple of months we could make another amiga disc. At these prices, though, we have to do some volume before the enterprise makes sense…. It costs about $1500 for the first CD, then they are only a couple of dollars each after that. Still, we have overhead [yes, business “overhead'' is real — "stamps? what can stamps cost? …i'll buy the stinking stamps myself!"]. I think the Amiga disc may eventually be popular, especially in Europe, but so far the response hasn't been overwhelming. One fact I learned tonight is that there is no standard CBM CDROM drive for the high end Amigas. Is this right? Can you use a generic scsi drive with the a2000 or a3000? -jack

Yes, that's true. Commodore hasn't released a CD-ROM drive yet…they've shown one a couple of times, but so far nothing has been released. The company in the title of this thread (Xetec) has a CD-ROM driver which works with a variety of different generic SCSI CD-ROM drives. Steve

Check out my article in the March 1992 issue of AmigaWorld. If you don't have access to back issues, I'll send you a xerox. Walnut Creek's collection of CD-ROMs is highly recommended. The collections are extensive and the prices are ridiculously low. They will be featured in my follow-up article that should appear in the August issue of AmigaWorld.

I'd buy the AB20 CD in a heart beat if I had a job so I could buy a CD-ROM drive. That CD and the Fred Fish CD would be the first two CDs in my collection. Please don't lose interest. It WOULD be nice if Commodore got out of the closet and released a CD-ROM drive of their own for all of the Amigas. Now if I can convince a friend of mine that runs a BBS to buy a larger harddrive and CD-ROM drive… 🙂 Dan McCoy – via Whap! and saving money doing it too!
