#CanDo 2.0 questions
5 messages in this thread
Martin,
Couple of questions concerning CanDo:
1) Is there a nice, clean way for me to access the ASL
file-requester rather than the CanDo.library file-requester? IMO, the
CanDo file-requester is the worst I've seen. I was very disappointed when
I took CanDo 2.0 home from the Sept WOCA and found out that it _still_
does not _use_ anything built into Kickstart/Workbench 2.04 (after all
this time…it absolutely astounds me that 2.04 could be ignored so
thoroughly!).
2) Could you upload a deck that shows how add/remove/modify buttons
on-the-fly from WITHIN the deck? I would really appreciate it. I was
told by INOVAtronics tech-support that "it's in there…look real hard".
I thought, "Yep, well, thanks a chunk." <G>
Thanks for your reply!

"Could you upload a deck that shows how add/remove/modify buttons

I had this same question. John Pendergrass came up with a semi-solution
and uploaded the deck to the libs. It involves moving existing buttons on
and off of the visible display area. But I don't think this is what I
need.
I would like to enable the user to create buttons ala AutoPilot's 'Add a
Forum' gadget. Is this somewhat like you had in mind?
DonovaN,
You said, "I would like to enable the user to create buttons ala
AutoPilot's 'Add a Forum' gadget. Is this somewhat like you had in
mind?"
Yep. I want the user to be able to create, delete, or modify buttons.
Mr. Pendergrass' deck is not the solution. I need something where the
user can modify the user interface to a particular program. I need them
to be able to do it in much the same way that CanDo allows me to do it.
Rumors have it that later versions of CanDo were done with earlier
versions of CanDo. If that's true, one would have to assume that the
capability to do what we want is in the program. We just need to find it.
Since I haven't been able to find it on my own, I just need a gentle
push.
Good luck!

Ric, at the moment the method that John Pendergrass demonstrated is the
only one I can recommend, except for using the DetachObject and
ReattachObject commands. With these commands you can detach a button or
field, and use the ClearWindow command (or other graphic commands) to
remove the representation of the Object from the display. Later you can
Reattach the Object and it will be re-displayed.

Martin, I hadn't considered doing a DetachObject/ReattachObject solution;
seems that it would work, but you'd still have to do a ClearWindow to get
the imagery correct.
As I recall, the individual asking the question wanted to allow the user
to 'build' their own interface on the fly. The solution that I would
offer in this regard (at least involving buttons) would be the DrawBorder
command, and control all the buttons yourself. That isn't too tough, and
would allow the user to select their own styles of buttons, locations,
size, etc. The program would need to make the whole screen a big 'button'
so that one could check where the mouse was clicked, and then activate the
DrawBorder command for hilighting the button, running a routine, etc….
Drawback of this is that there is no corresponding string input command,
document command, etc. The user would need to roll their own routines to
duplicate the CanDo functions. Daunting.
At least one could allow the user to somewhat customize an interface,
etc.
Talk with you later. ttfn
