#Editmaster

Does anyone know if the editmaster works with the toaster? If
so…How?
Thanks,
Tom Spyrison
Tom,
Information is sketchy at the moment, but from the flyer I've got and
other information I've gatherred, I believe it will work with the Toaster to
some degree. It appears that they will co-exist peacefully in a single Amiga
since the Editmaster doesn't use the video slot or do any genlocking. Also, I
believe using ADPro that framestores could be converted to be output with
Editmaster. Lightwave anim's should be able to be output with Editmaster as
well. Also, I would think (again using ADPro) that recorded Editmaster frames
will be able to be imported into Lightwave to be used as backdrops, textures
wraps, etc…
I wouldn't guess that the two would multi task well, however. The
Toaster switcher doesn't multi-task well with anything, and my guess is that
the Editmaster will be fairly selfish with the processor as well.
The flyer does indicate that the output is stable enough to be input to
the Toaster switcher without TBC. It also says it supports AREXX and can
control the Toaster that way through the serial port.
My take is that the best practical solution will have the Editmaster in
one Amiga and have it feed the Toaster in a second Amiga.
My hope is that it lives up to all its promises.

If you're considering getting the EditMaster you might want to have a look
at the DPS board first. It also plays video off the hard drive. A friend
of mine who was at NAB saw both boards and is going to get one of the DPS
cards. He said they looked like the output was a bit better.
Also, the Toaster switcher DOES multi-task. Open up a program on your
WorkBench screen (like Rend 24) before you start the Toaster and you'll be
able to get back to the workbench using the 'right amiga-m' keys.
That's 'LEFT Amiga-M' & LEFT Amiga-N to switch WorkBench ot the front and
back.
BTW, how much IS this DPS board?
Thanks,
Erik Flom
Whoops, You're right about the key combo.
I THINK the DPS board is about $3000 US. Best to call them and find out
for sure. I dont' think they'll be quite ready to ship for a month or two.
Apparently there were still a couple of bugs to be squashed in the board
they showed at NAB. Their demo tape looked pretty good though. Saw it
yesterday. Darn, now I want one.
The DPS board is $1995. The Personal TBC IV (required if you want to capture
moving video) is $995. –Rick Rodriguez
When will there be a PAL version?
Sorry, Geir, but to what are you referring? Impulse is currently developing
the Dream Machine, a JPEG capture and playback board which should be available
in NTSC and PAL mode upon its release sometime later this year. If you're
asking about Editmaster or DPS' Personal Animation Recorder, you'll have to
check with their respective manufacturers. –Rick Rodriguez
Thanks, it was the Dream Machine.
Could you give me som specs. like
Imput and Outputs?
Compression rates and resolution?
Timecode?
Who will be the european distributor (i'm a dealer)
BTW. Whenn will Imagine 3.0 be released?
Thanks for your help.
Geir, I don't have a lot of info on the Dream Machine, but here's what I know:
it will output in NTSC, PAL and SECAM composite; S Video; and RGB. It will
digitize RGB, S Video and Composite. I don't know about compression rates and
resolution or time code. As soon as I have firm word from Impulse, I'll pass
it along.
Impulse estimates that a box with a hard drive large enough to hold 30 seconds
will cost under $3K.
Imagine 3.0 will be out mid-summer. –Rick Rodriguez

From the Switcher you need to use the Ctrl-Ctrl-Alt-Alt combination, and
from LightWave or ToasterPaint you would use the Left Amiga M or N combo.

Jeff, Yep, I've heard about the DPS board. Also, an Impulse board as well,
although I don't think it has been shown anywhere yet. The advantage to the
Editmaster to the others is that it offers digitizing as well. From what I've
heard that's a future extra cost option for the DPS and hasn't even been
mentioned for the Impulse board.
In any case, whichever one gets broadcast quality output first is going
to get my money.
By the way, as far as multitasking on the Toaster, I was mainly talking
about the Switcher which as far as I know does not allow multi- tasking while a
transition is occurring. For instance, if you have a music sequencer
multitasking and playing a song, the song stops during a switcher transition.
If there is a way around THAT multitasking problem I would love to hear about
it!
Terry Tabor
You're right about the DPS board needing more hardware to do digitizing.
Apparently their new TBC card will allow you to record video to the hard
drive. Of course if you're using a Toaster you need a TBC anyways so this
seems like a workable solution. Of course if you've already got a pair of
TBC's…..
I suspect the first one on the market with broadcast quality is going to
win big even if a later board is a bit better. It'll be like when the
Toaster was first released; there will be a mad scramble to get one for
the first month or two and then demand will fall off. Most of the people
who HAD to have one will have theirs already and the hobbyists will wait
for a while for the price to fall.
As for the Switcher suspending background tasks during a transition this
is the first I've heard about it. I'd have thought the chips on the
Toaster board would be doing all the work then. Oh well, live & learn.
:^)
Actually, digitizing has been mentioned for the Impulse Board. In fact,
it will digitize RGB, S-Video as well as Composite. (as stated in their
Impulse Graphics World newsletter)

Terry,
<if you have a music sequencer multitasking and playing a song, the song stops

You might want to check with Sunrize industries and Blue Ribbon Soundworks.
Sunrize has a custom Toaster Driver (about $200) that will allow Toaster
transitions and arexx control of their sound card simultaneously. If you are
operating the Sunrize board with this driver AND using Bars and Pipes 2.0, you
should in theory be able to play MIDI files as well. I'm not completely sure,
so you might want to check with them. This feature may only be implimented with
the use of the One Stop Music shop's built in MIDI. If you call Blue Ribbon,
ask for Todor Fay, he should be able to give you the latest.

The multitasking pause with the VideoToaster has been fixed by Sunrize. It
works very well.

Terry,
The guys at Sunrize have a software patch to the Studio 16 Digital
Recording program that will allow it to carry on playing digital audio
during a Switcher transition. This might be an answer to your problem if
are in a position to record the output of your sequencer direct to disk.

From what I understand the DPS board is a playback only system, with a
dedicated HD. If you also get their TBC-4 you will be able to trap video.
But I would need editing.
Even if you could edit with something like ADPro, that would be OK. I
would think that you could create transitions and get around cuts only.
Not easy sure, you would have to animate the action but Arexx would be
available to help.
I multi-task between the Switcher, ToasterPaint, ADPro, DPaint… the only
problem I get is when my memory starts to "fragment" (I think thats the
right term?).

Jeff,
Have you uploaded any info?specs/$$ on the DPS board. I came into the
thred late and missed the initial info.
Thanks for any info.

Laurie,
I haven't posted any information on the DPS board and I don't have any. I
saw a demo tape of it and heard a bit about it from a friend who was at
NAB. Your best bet is to call DPS and ask them directly.
Jeff,
Thanks

Laurie,
I have the flyer for the DPS Personal Animation Recorder in my hot little
hands. The highlights –
– Variable Speed 24-bit animation playback
– Genlock input
– MHz Video Bandwith
– 60dB S/N
– Random Access Still Frame Retrieval
– Archive with standard tape backup software
– Betacam/MII component analog video output
– Record unlimited first generation tape dubs
$1995 US$ – plugs into amiga expansion slot w/o hard disk.
Rick
Rick thanks a million,
I just want to get this right, this can be used to record say Imagine
animations frame accurate to v/tape so that the you wouldnt then need
something like the Panasonic AG7750 single frame recorder ??
And also does it work with S-VHS and the Sony Hi-8 format.?
This sounds similar to the Dream Machine that Impulse talked about in
their latest newsletter ie digital recording to tape.
Again thanks

> (the DPS Personal Animation Recorder) can be used to record say Imagine
> animations frame accurate to v/tape (without a single frame recorder?)
That's the idea. From the flyer, my impression is that the only output is
component analog, in other words, Betacam/MII. No S-Video, meaning no
S-VHS or Hi-8. Though if you pair it with DPS's Personal TBC IV you can
use it to capture and record video in real time and The Personal TBC IV
has S-Video in and out as well as optional optional component analog
output. It might be that if you have both boards you could transcode the
component analog to S-Video and output it to a S-VHS or Hi-8 recorder.
(Dragging out Impluse's Newletter – do these guys have a spelling
checker?) The Dream Machine will output in Composite, S-Video, RGB in
NTSC, PAL and SECAM – and digitize as well.
I guess we'll just have to wait to see who is the first out of the gate
with this stuff. My local dealer said that it would be at least a few
months for the DPS board – in computer development terms that usually
means don't hold your breath.

Rick,
Thanks very much for the detailed onfo. A mate of mine at work is
very interested inthis technology as he has just about landed his first
client for video work off the Amiga.

Rick, No SMPTE time code support? That's pretty important.

Not that I can see.
