I was just given Soundblaster Pro. It looks like a great package but when
I looked through the manuals it says it only supports Creative Labs,
Panasonic and Matsushita CD-ROM drives. I have a Sony CDU-510 running with
mscdex 2.21 and the current Sony driver. Will this work, in any way, with
the Soundblaster board or do I have to keep it and my current SCSI in my
system? If not how do I reconnect my ROM drive to Soundblaster. All their
manual says is "detailed instructions and the necessary cables are provided
when you purchase the drive from Creative Labs or their dealers." Thanks
for nothing!! If I must have my current SCSI AND Soundblaster any advice
on configs would be greatly appreciated. In my previous, albeit infrequent,
visits to this forum some wizard has always helped out. I'm hoping that
lightning strikes in the same place! TIA -dk
I recently had an experience like yours, and got help here. Basically, you
can use your SB Pro just as a sound board, and keep your present SCSI
controller. Just install whatever drivers you need for the sound portion
of your card, and ignore the SCSI part. You can connect the audio out of
your CD-ROM to the in of the SB using a proprietary cable, or take the easy
way out and hook a 1/8" stereo cable from the headphone jack of the CD to
the audio in of the SB-Pro.

Media Vision, 510 770-8600, sells a cable/driver kit and hardware necessary
to use a cd-rom drive with the Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum sound card.
Once installed you will be able to utilize your cd-rom drive as both a
logical dos drive and an audio cd player. External drives require a 50-50
pin scsi ribbon cable, 25 pin to 50 pin scsi cable, dual rca phono to 1/8"
mini jack cable, dual rca phono to dual rca phono cable and most important,
external cd-rom bracket adapter. if you rom-drive has rca outputs you just
plug them in to the rca jacks on the external bracket adapter. Kit costs
about $80…any cd rom will work with it as you are just plugging in the
sound part to the sound card. You do not have to use the scsi interface,
esp if your cd-rom does not have 50 pin ribbon cable!
I've got all the necessary cabling, etc., but I'm currently using the PAS
16 only as a sound board, because I've got a perfectly good SCSI host
adaptor controlling my hard drive, floppies, and CD. I would change over
anyway, but the docs for the PAS say that the transfer rate is limited to
675KB/s, and I can't figure out why or if this is true, but I sure don't
want to slow my hard drive down. Any ideas???

Yes Duncan I would like to know the same. I do not have a ROM drive yet but
was miss led that the SB Pro would allow a CD-ROM connection. But now I
find out its only theirs. I'm thinking of taking the board back unless
someone can can recommend their CD Drives are better.
