David,
Well, I was reading some books and they suggested lanolin mixed with petroleum
jelly or even fat (no type specified).

I think that a few layers of fat would be a big help, was that applied on
the outside or the inside? <g>

Greg,
they aren't specific about the fat, unfortunately. I hate to say this but after
advice from my swimming instructor I may be wearing a shorty wetsuit, after
all, since I'm environmentally conscious and don't want to cause a large
oilslick in the SF Bay <g>.
It sounds like you're getting mighty conservative in your old age, Martin. A
wetsuit? You mean you want to survive the swim? (That's good to hear,
actually… we need you here!)

Gary,
it looks like it may end up being a combination of a cut-off type wetsuit and a
liberal vaseline/lanolin mixture. We're in training, at the moment, swimming at
South Laguna Beach almost every day and I'll need to try and find the best
combination. Unfortunately, the water here is a good 10 degrees Fahrenheit
above the bay temp which doesn't allow for good testing or aclimatization
training. My local health spa did have a plunge pool outside the sauna at about
the right temperature (50 degrees) but they had a fire and are closed. I was
going to do some progressively longer sessions in that, what a shame.
BTW, did you get a chance to read my last e-mail, concerning the flic file?

Martin:
Wheel Bearing Grease… no kidding.

Craig,
Actually, I had considered some left-over, marine-grade, axle grease that I had
left over from when I owned a fishing boat. I was just a little concerned about
the consequences to my skin and the marine population.
Do like the American Indians. Use bear grease. Get a (very) recently dead bear,
flay it, scrape off the fat, cook it down, apply *liberally*. Ta daa.
David,
Now there's a practical solution for a latter-day, frigid-water, long-distance
swimmer. <g>
Can you bear it?
Oooohhh! <g, d & hobble away lamely>

David,
Nice one, David. Teehee, ha ha, choke! <g>
