#MS-DOS 6 Fails

I knew I should have come here FIRST. BUT……..
Call MS-DOS for assistance, the 90 days no change service for 6. And the
tech will call me back tomorrow. He needs to do gather info on my Amiga
2000 and the bridgeboard. And so while he is getting up to speed.
Let me state my problem.
After typing in a:setup and entering. A message saying drive D failed.
Well my system does not have a D, so reply f. The next thing after the
screen formats is this message:
Unrecoverable Error
Hard Disk Is not readable
Press enter to exit setup
I made a startup disk following instructions in chapter 8. And booted
from the startup disk, and run chkdsk with no problem.
Change both autoexe and config to the basics.
HAS ANYONE HAD THIS PROBLEM?
ANY SUGGESTIONS.

Perhaps we should collect all these MSDOS horror stories and call it
"Tales From The DOSside." <g> At any rate, I think you can check you MSDOS
partitions using FDISK, make sure only C: is your primary DOS partition,
if that doesn't work, GO MSDOS and get help over there, I have found them
very helpful.
Speaking of horror stories, BE CAREFUL with dblspace — that little
monster wiped out all my files! I also found some dos commands hanging on
the prompt, all I had to do was move them from the DOS directory to
another directory I named Test. I deleted the original DOS directory and
renamed the Test directory DOS, guess what — everything now works! How's
that for strange?

Have you considered DRDOS 6.0? You can GO NDSG to learn about it.
I've used the included SuperStor successfully on the MAKEAB pseudo-C
drive. Addstor has offered an upgrade to DRDOS 6's SuperStor to SuperStor
PRO. I found the installation to be easy. It will setup your CONFIG.SYS
and AUTOEXEC.BAT files for you. It may not be as automated as MSDOS 6.0,
but it does the job. You need Janus 2.1 for everything to work correctly.
I am running DRDOS 6 on a hardcard with an XT bridgeboard.
DRDOS 6 commands have a help switch, and you can use DOSBOOK as an
online help utility. It also has delete protection. It is possible to
run DELWATCH as a Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) program. The user can
specify in the setup how long and how many copies are kept. Files aren't
actually deleted until the space is needed. DELPURGE can be run to do the
actual deletion ahead of the need. The DRDOS 6 utilities can also be used
to recover files accidently deleted. DISKMAP will make a copy of the File
Allocation Table (FAT) for UNDELETE to use. In the third method of file
recovery, UNDELETE can attempt an unaided recovery.

Look in your config.sys file and remove the JLINK.SYS line this will get rid of
the problem you are having.
I do not have a JLINK.SYS in my config.sys, which looks like this for one
of the installs:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
DEVICE=C:\Janus\JDisk.SYS
Stacks=0,0
BUFFERS=40
FILES=40
SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM C:\DOS\ /e:512 /p

sorry remove the line with DEVICE=C:\Janus\Jdisk.sys This line assigns
a fake drive that the DOS install can not read. After you remove this
line reset the Bridge board and setup should work.
I removed the line DEVICE=c:\janus\jdisk.sys, it made no difference.
I do not have a fake drive, I do have an HD on the IBM side.

From look at your config.sys it appears you have a fake drive over on
the amiga side. Have you tried booting from the MS-DOS 6.0 disks to
get the program to install. If all else fails rename your config.sys
and autoexec.bat files to another name then reboot the computer.
Additionally you might want to try this. SUBST E:\ C:\ , this
command will cause dos to assign the E drive to the c drive.
Why do you say I have a fake drive, both sides have real harddrives.
I have made a bootable MS-DOS 6.0 disk and booted from it. No luck.
Let me look into your other suggestions.

The "fake" drive refers to the drive assignments that
jdisk.sys creates when it is loaded on the msdos side. Jdisk.sys is
a Janus driver which permits creating psuedo drives using Amiga
devices which can be accessed through the Janus interface on the PC
side. Jdisk.sys will allocate drives D through G, assuming the only
"real" drive is drive C:. The MSDOS setup will actually find these
drive assignments, even though you have not run JLINK.COM and try to
read them. That's the reason you get the error message for these
drives. Removing jdisk.sys will get rid of that.
However, that doesn't address the real problem. I had a similar
problem trying to set up Dos 5.0 from the distribution disks. Assuming that
you first booted from the 6.0 disks and performed first an FDISK, then a FORMAT
on the hard drive, you might try running FDISK again and rewriting the MBR.
It's possible that the MBR didn't get written or was corrupted. If that
doesn't work I would suggest you install 6.0 onto some floppy disks, re-format
the hard drive (FORMAT C: /S) from 6.0, then just copy over the files. That
was the only way I was ever able to get 5.0 to work. There seems to be a
problem with MSDOS and the BB when it comes to the hard drives. MSDOS seems to
have aproblem recognizing the hard drive as legitimate, hence the error
message.
Getting interesting these problems with MsDos 5 and BBoards.
I recently installed a 386sx and an extra 4mb of 70ns zip. I have dh2:
configured as a 32mb dos drive which has c: and d: I also used superstor
which gives an effective 55mb drive. There were no problems installing
msdos 5 or windows. Just sailed straight through the installation
procedure.
Now I've installed Excel 4 also with no trouble as I borrowed a friends hd
floppy from his 486 tower. However, problems have reared up.
The main problem being that starting Excel takes about 20secs to getting a
blank sheet on the screen. However, the drive light keeps on flickering
like crazy for another 17mins. That's right 17 minutes. is this weird or
what. I've spoken to very clued up friends and they are at a loss to know
what the problem is. One thought is that the 'hard drive' is in reallity a
file on an AmigaDos partition and this is inefficient and so slows up
getting and writing back swap files.
Next point ( allthough this started as a reply to Steven 🙂 ) does
anyone know of a combo board with vga, ide and floppy drive controllers
all on one board. Using an A3000 has severe limitations with only 2 dos
slots.

Yes, your observation of the disk activity is more than likely due to
the fact that you are using the psuedo drive. It is painfully slow and totally
unsuitable for Windows work. A dedicated hard drive will solve that. Dave
Cinege of EMC (he's on this forum) sells the Oak combo board for $200. It has
SVGA, two serial, two parallel, game port, IDE controller, and floppy drive
controller. It's a low profile board and will fit nicely into a 3000. I have
two. One in my 2000 and the other for the 3000 when my second BB comes in.
The only negative for the board is that the video is not the fastest, but it is
adequate. I benchmarked it at about 50% slower than a Diamond Speedstar. The
IDE controller will handle two drives and the floppy controller will handle any
floppies from 360 to 1.44meg, 5!/4 and/or 3 1/2".
