I can second your claim that fire departments have the best maps. Years
ago I served a few years as a volunteer medical transportation driver for
American Red Cross. When my maps failed me I simply dropped into a fire
station. Since I was on official Red Cross business and the fire department
has a long history of working together with Red Cross (disaster evaluation
and relief, for one thing), the firemen were always quite happy to assist.
