I've just received PgS 2.2 & AE. I've used Pp since it was PageSetter so
I'm not without some idea of DTP & fonts. I can't figure out your font
system so I can use my Pp CG & PS fonts.
I understand the theory, but not the mechanics of PgS. Everyone has raved
about your font management so I would love to take advantage of it. Can I
use the Ppage CG & PS 3 files in PgS as is, or must I find the original PS
1 files & make YET another dir!?
I see that PgS PS fonts need a header to tell PgS it is to be downloaded
(or not)…must I redo all my Pp PS fonts in a PgS format? I tried putting
the Pp CGFonts dir in the PgS font path…got beautiful screen fonts but
no PS printout for them, only Helvetica. BTW is there a limit to the
number of fonts to a dir? Some at the beginning didn't show up, but did
come into the string gadget when I clicked on the first ones….weird?
Exactly what files DO I need and where do they go? For argument's sake I
want a floppy with a collection of Headline fonts-ONLY CG & PS- what dirs
& files do I put on it? It's just not clear to me. The PS dir in PgS has a
dir for each font! WHY? Do I have to set up my Pp fonts that way for PgS?

Gracia: If the CG fonts you're using are equivalent to fonts resident in the
PostScript printer, then it's not a big deal. We already provide the required
files with PageStream. If the CG fonts you want to use are in oops, are not
resident, then they must be downloaded. CG fonts cannot be downloaded to a
PostScript printer due to incompatibilities. There is a way to do this with
PageStream2—it requires a PSF file telling PageStream the name of an
equivalent .PS file to download (just like PPage.) Unfortunately, there is no
way for a user to create a PSF file. We didn't add this capability to TypeSmith
because PSF files are heading for the dustbin with 3.0.
In 3.0, we plan to generate the information on the fly from the CG files, so
that you can print them to PostScript printers without thinking about what type
of font file they are. But until then, there is no way to print CG fonts to a
PS printer easily with PgS unless you know how to make a PSF file, and how to
edit your fontequiv file.
For now, you can either get somebody who knows how to make PSF files to make
some for you. (The PS files from GD are the same format we use so you don't
have to change those.) But unless you like newzap, you should probably wait for
3.0 for this feature. Your best bet until then is to convert the fonts to
PostScript Type 1 format with a program like Type- Smith, or to use other
fonts.
I apologize for the confusion. I should have alerted you that CG fonts do not
work with PS printers very well. We are working to make fonts easier than ever
in 3.0. And of course, if you just bought a full copy of 2.2, you'll get a free
upgrade to 3.0.
There are lots of good PD fonts online here that you can download for use with
PgS. There are also lots on our BBS.
BTW, we have a new font collection of high quality PostScript fonts that we
will be selling at a really low price very soon. Stay tuned for more info.

About time too. While it's fair enough that there should be many different
types of fonts, (CG, PS, TT, etc), otherwise nothing new and better would
ever happen, the poor end-user shouldn't have to worry about it or even
have to spend all day converting between formats. That really ought to be
the job of the DTP software.
PgS3 is sounding better and better all the time.
