#DMA Probs with Mitsumi

1st thanks for the "good english thing" 🙂
Ok, it may be a interrupt problem, but why does it not occur if I'm using the
Interrupt-Only Driver without using the DMA ? The problem doesen't occur even
in programs also at the Dos-prompt; performig such easy commands like "dir d:"
(d: is my CD-ROM) locks the system up sometimes – I switched on my computer,
tried the dir d: and often the system hung.
I will post my config and autoexec as soon as I found out how to do it… 🙂
(I don't like to type them in…)

PS: I got DOS 6.0 today – it seemed to work, but… LOCKUP

Erik — the fact that MTMCDS works is almost a dead giveaway that there is an
interrupt problem. Using the MTMCDS driver basically bypasses all the
interrupt stuff. I found after making some changes to my system that only
MTMCDS would work, because I had changed a setting on the interface card but
had neglected to make the same change in the command. To send your files, copy
the files to a disk file and then you can e-mail me the file. I suppose there
are better ways to do it, but I don't know how either. <g>

Hi Craig,
Sorry, but I think you misunderstood me: I used the MTMCDE driver
without the DMA (Setting /T:S) then the driver runs *only* via
Interrupt. The MTMCDS is a polling driver – I *never* used this
because lack of speed.
And this ^ shows me that there is a problem with DMA…
Maybe the freaks at Mitsumi just convertet the driver from the old
CRMC and made a few changes – but their new drives are a little bit
faster and there a timing problems with the DMA transfers.
And as I need the problem solved – my 7th Guest is running well with
the DMA *enabled* only (when it works sometimes) – and I love 7th
guest. So I hope that there will be a new driver shortly otherwise I
must search all my money an buy such a Toshiba Double Spin Drive…

Erik — Yes, I did misunderstand you. I can't recall, but have you tried all
this with the minimum config.sys and autoexec.bat files — with nothing loaded
high and no other TSR's? — If the problem is still there then — with no
loadhighs and not EMM's, etc. then one begins to suspect a hardware problem,
either in your setup, or in the drive, interface card or your computer. Is
there any way you can try your drive out on another computer? I guess what I'm
suggesting is to start all over again with a re-install of the drive, checking
all board settings, and trying to eliminate all sources of conflict. If
working properly, the drive does work pretty well, and I'm sure Mitsumi is
selling thousands of them. Let's keep at this until we get it fixed!!.

yes, I tried everything – loading low and high, different DOS-Versions, all
cards in and out, all addresses, all interrupts, all DMA's… but LOCKUP…
That is the frustrating point – I really tried everything possible – stop not
everything – throwing the mitsumi out of the window 🙂
I'll get crazy – I want to play my 7th guest… argh… (sorry for this)

Erik — Gee, I really don't know what to say. You have obviously tried just
about everything — I assume that you also tried different interrupts — I am
beginning to suspect that you have a defective interface card or drive, since
your problems are not at all common. Do you hace access to another computer
where you could try the stuff out? — Check with your dealer, the thing is
still in warranty, right?. Also, the order of TSR's loading does seem to have
an effect in some cases. Sorry I can't be of more help, but go back to the
dealer and DEMAND that they make it work!!

sorry but I also did change the drive and the interface card. I think it must
be the board or the driver which does't seem to work correctly with some
boards…

In an earlier message you said the drive works with software polling or
interupts; why do you insise on the DMA transfer? (don't say speed because you
will not see the difference on a newer drive {ie: 350 access}).
