I'm interested in purchasing a Sony CDU 31-A and have been told that the slow
access time (550 ms) is compensated for by a 2 Meg/sec burst rate. Is this a
true statement and will the drive perform as well as a driverated at 350ms. Thx

I can't speak for the CDU-31A in particular, but I can tell you that from a
hardware stand-point I find the CDU-535 (350ms) I purchased from Sony to be
excellent. But, I'm going to warn you that I have found support from the
corporate level to be abyssmal. Chuck Roman, the Sony rep here, has been very
helpful and informative, but waiting for software upgrades, etc. from higher up
has been absolutely futile.
If all you plan to do is listen to CDs and play games/work with DOS/Windows3.x
apps, by all means go with Sony. If you want to do more than that: BEWARE!!
