#HP Printer Drivers

Last night I downloaded LJ4DDD.LHA and HPLJ4.LZH and tried them out on the
following: A2000, WB 2.1, FinalCopy II 2.0, HP LaserJet 4L Unfortunately,
FinalCopy didn't seem to be able to use either one. It would start the print
process and then quickly return to normal edit mode without displaying an error
message. In the past that kind of response has been the result of selecting an
unusable print driver in preferences. Any ideas where I may be going wrong?

The 4L, being 300dpi, probably requiies a _very_ different driver. Even
try a IIIp driver or something. And the LJ4DDD is only for a specific pd
utility.

The 4L should work just fine with the HP_LJ_4 driver as long as the 600
dpi densities are not selected.

Is the 4L 600DPI??
I have a NEC 95. It has hp III (hpl 5) and the HPLJ4 driver works fine
for me.

The 4M is 600 dpi, but the 4L is the replacement for the IIIP which just came
out (you may have seen HPs ads on TV the last week or so). So I'm sure that a
IIIP driver should theoretically work. But I downloaded HPLJ4.LZH and tried it
with FinalCopyII and when I request a print, it pauses momentarily as if it
will work, but then just returns to edit mode without ever printing or
returning an error mmessage. Puzzling!

As my other message says – I think you have an installation problem.
Try another program – even the GraphicDump program in your WB:Tools
directory and see if you can get a dump of your WB screen. You should
know right away if it is working correctly cause your printout will be
larger compared to what the CBM Laserjet driver gives you.

The 4L is 300 dpi, but it uses a finer toner, so should blow away any
other 300 dpi laser when it comes to printing pictures.
GO HPPERIPHER and download LJ4L.ANN from library 4. This is HP's
announcement on the printer. Pretty neat little printer.

The HP 4L is 300dpi w/res enhancement (and memory enhancement). Microfine
toner too. Enhanced PCL 5. And *_5 watts_* in standby; in operation, 1/2
half the power used by the IIP.

LJ4DDD.lha is for use with DocDump ONLY. It can not be used with any
other program.
As for HPLJ4.LZH – did you unarchive it to get the two files in the
archive (HP_LJ_4 and ReadMe)? Did you copy the file 'HP_LJ_4' into your
DEVS:Printers drawer? Did you select this driver with Prefs/Printer? Did
you properly set up Prefs/PrinterGfx (i.e. Shade=GreyScale1,
Dithering=HalfTone, Scaling=Fraction, Image=Positive, Limits=Ignore,
Center Picture=empty, Density=4 or 6 (read the docs), etc)???? These
settings may not be too important, since they MUST be set in FC.
Make sure you don't have Color selected – definitely not going to print
with this selection.
Your problem is either an installation problem with the driver, or a
configuration problem with Preferences or FinalCopy. The driver works
great with FCI, FCII and FCII 2.0. For a page size the driver recognizes
(Letter, Legal, A4, etc) when using PrintDensity 1 to 4 (since your LJ4L
is 300 dpi max, using Density 5 will not be a good idea!) set the
unprintable top/bottom to 0.2" each, and unprintable left/right to 0.25"
each. If you use PrintDensity 6, set all these to 0" (zero).
I am using an A2500/20, WB 2.04, FCII 2.0, and the LJ4M. Just ran the
bicycle test page to graphic printer at 300 dpi with no problems (I use PS
printing when ever possible with most programs – faster then graphic
(bitmap) printing).
Good luck tracking down the configuration problem.
