I have a friend with a dead A1000. The symptoms are: 1) On initial power up, it never goes beyond a grey screen. 2) Soft booting will then get it past the grey screen, but doesn't always come up with the kickstart icon. 3) When the kickstart icon does show up, it doesn't always read the disk drive, and it exibits random reboots, even when it is reading the kickstart diskette. She is in San Diego, I am in Seattle, so I do not have many more details of the problem…. We have made sure that all the chips are seated, but that didn't help much. I will probally send her my spare A500, but it would be nice to get the A1000 running again…… It doesn't use the same PIO chips as the A500/A2000 does it? (or, is it the PIA I am thinking of? Two chips per Amiga?) If it does, I can send her those, as I have a spare set…. Also, assuming I send her my A500, can she use her old monitor and mouse? All help appreciated! Karl

Karl, Does your friend's A1000 have the PAL grounding modification? The A1000 does use the same 8520's that the A500/A2000. The usual way to check them is to swap them in the machine and see if the symptoms change. If so, at least one of them is bad. The monitor will be fine. The mouse will work electrically, but, if it has a 90-degree plug on it, your friend might need to experiment with different physical arrangements. David
