I am looking for information on a unit to write compact disks, not just read them. Is such a unit available? Can it/they be controlled vis computer? Are software drivers available? I am interested in doing single frame animations, and understand these units do away with single frame controllers and VTRs, etc… Does the software/hardware support sound as well as images? And, optionally, do these units support Kodak's Photo CD format. This isn't necessary, but is a thought for adiitional use. Any info (cost, pluses, where) will be much appreciated. Thanks.a

Ummm There's CDROM's that are Recordable in the under $6000 range, not too useful for Single Framing Animations tho, for that you'd really need a Recordable Laser Disc which costs apprx 3 times the price of the Recordable CDROM units. Also the Media is considerably more expensive. a Recordable CD is approx $20 ea, a Recordable Video Laser Disk is approx $300 each and Rewriteable Laser Disks are approx $1200 each.

From New Media Magazine (Mar, 93): 'Pinnacle CD-ROM writer breaks price barrier' Pinnacle Micro's RCD-202 CD-ROM recorder whipped last month for $3,995, approximately half the cost of competing systems. The unit ca be used to read & write CDs in a number of formats, including multisession PhotoCDs, AppleHFS, and ISO-9660. It can also record audio CD discs from AIFF and Digidesign Sound Designer II files. The recorder is a half-height SCSI device and discs cost $39/ea. Yes, but Frank was asking for an easy way to record animation frames for video playback. This has *nothing* to do with CDROM mastering systems.

Yeah, sorry. I realized it was the wrong type after posting the message. (Though he DID ask about CD_ROM recorders. Oh well, maybe it'll give someone else an idea . . )

While we're on the subject- What is the ultimate value and/or thriftiest way to get our Lightwave IFF24 frames to tape?. Not including the up and coming item from DPS, is a used 3/4" machine still the best? –Paul < Motorola Inside >

I'll know better after I see the Toaster4000 in operation today, but I'd say the best route is to use HAM8 anims. Of course, if you don't have an AGA machine . . . .:^( Personally, I'm waiting for something like the DPS board for true 24 bit output. (I think SF recorders are going to be passe in the next year or two.) Keep On Toastin' Erik Flom
