#CDROM DOCUMNTRY ON ABC

One of the leading investigative reporters on TV is planning on doing an hour
long documentary on CD-ROM intended for broadcast throughout the Southwest and
California (it will probably be picked up by many if not most ABC affiliates).
Shooting is scheduled to start in about two weeks and will probably be
completed in two more.
General drift of theme is: CD-ROM and Empowering Technology that is here Now!
It hopes to show the promise and potential of CD-ROM in communications,
education, entertainment, training, and so on.
Any suggestions of what CD-ROM titles, themes, stories, story lines, people,
events, places, etc. to include will be appreciated.
The goal is to make this information available to people that may not be aware
of it.
Any ideas?

Hi Jan.
I have been conducting a research and development project for Photo CD
applications in consumer markets. I have many samples of possible products,
services, etc.
Perhaps your producers would like to see what we've been doing…

I am very interested in Photo CD myself (we have developed a very good
viewer/converter/multimedia authoring tool that is much faster than Kodak's, by
the way).
Photo CD will definitely be a part of this program – both the producer and
myself would be very interested in what you are doing (I produce the CoC CD-ROM
of CD-ROMs directory on CD-ROM).
BTW, Barry's Camera (Dallas), recently bought out by Wolf, has DOUBLED their
PHOTO CD prices. What are your prices? I have produced over 100 discs so far
and that is just the beginning. I'm so distressed at this price increase that
I am thinking of buying a Nikon scanner. Comments?

Jan, might want to have them consider, briefly, the instantaneous database
access that emergency rooms (and hospital-based physicians, in general) have
using networked CD-ROM readers. Textbooks, poison control information, drug
interaction evaluation, etc.

The Library of Congress has two CD-ROM projects going at the present
time. One is for the sale and distribution of LC's bibliographic data on
CD-ROM and the other is for the preservation and distribution of pictures,
photographs, and documents on American history. It is called American Memory.
Both projects have (I think) tremendous implications for education, both in and
out of school.

Dear Jan:
You might want to talk to Mike Stein of User Interface Technologies, a small
startup firm in California who has created a graphic user interface for the
operation of audio/visual and other equipment. The graphics are genlocked over
video, the user uses a single remote to move a cursor to appropriate fields to
select by clicking.
The system is CD-ROM based (Commodore OEM) and is the slickest graphic control
system around I've seen. It will be featured on a CNBC program called "Sights
and Sounds" on June 16.
I think it shows a very ingenious application of CD-ROM technology. Leave me a

Hi Jan,
I think that Tom Lopez would be an excellent fit for this piece. He's currently
president of the Interactive MM Association (as well as co-chair of Mammoth
Micro Productions) and one of his charters is to address these very issues. He
is also the creator of the original Bookshelf which Microsoft bought and
brought into its world (Tom was the first GM of MS' CD-ROM group as well). He
brings a real interesting perspective to this discussion.
Who should I contact to line up something beteen ABC and Tom? Are you managing
this process or was this posted as an FYI for everyone? I can be reached either
