I'm about to install Windows on my 3DS system… Anything I should be aware of? Can I run 3DS and Windows with a single config.sys & autoexec.bat? Thanks in advance! Steve Ormonde

Steve: We've been running both 3DS, ACAD, Windows, Ani Pro, etc. on the same systems on a network with no problems for years – with only one config.sys and autoexec.bat! No problem! We highly recommend QEMM386 for the above feat, however. <g> Greg Pyros

I'm still switching between two CONFIG.SYS for Windows and AutoCAD. I do have QEMM in there for AutoCAD, but it's yanked for Windows. Most of the time I think I'm a smart guy, but I feel like a $8/hour COBOL programmer when it comes to re-arranging these things. I don't like taking something apart if I think I'll break it in the process, and there are so many things to verify that aren't broken… On my Windows setup, I have: ASPI4DOS.SYS, ASPIDISK.SYS, ASPICDRM.SYS, ASPITAPE.SYS, HIMEM.SYS, EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=A000-CFFF, MOUSE.SYS ANSIVEGA.SYS, SETVER.EXE, RAMDRIVE.SYS 384 /E, SMARTDRV.EXE /DOUBLE_BUFFER, then Windows for Workgroups: protman.dos, exp16.dos, NDIS to Crynwyr packet driver shim ndispkt.dos, and workgrp.sys. For AutoCAD, I have: ASPI4DOS.SYS, ASPIDISK.SYS, ASPICDRM.SYS, ASPITAPE.SYS, QEMM386.SYS MEMORY=7356 MAPS=2 NOVIDEOFILL NOSORT, MOUSE.SYS, ANSIVEGA.SYS, SETVER.EXE, RAMDRIVE.SYS 384 /E, and SMARTDRV.EXE /DOUBLE_BUFFER c d. In those orders. I've only got 8 megs in this 486/33, and I'd like to use as much as possible in either Windows, 3DS or AutoCAD.

Thanks John! My setup is very similar. I don't know a whole lot about addresses, but why do you exclude A000-CFFF? Steve Ormonde

I think it had something to do with my HiColor VGA card.

Thanks John! Do you know if anyone has created any decent .sxp's yet? You know what would be nice is a renderman shader converter to sxp's so we could take advantage of all the _great_ shaders out there. Steve Ormonde

Yikes! Who else has done a Renderman intepreter except for Pixar? It's tougher than cloning PostScript, and I'm sure it's harder to do right.
#44630From: Steve OrmondeMay 25, 1993 11:19 AM
O.K, O.K. … forget the rman shader to .sxp converter! <g> Seriously though, has _anyone_ created any .sxp's, other than the ones shipping with 3ds? Seems to me that there's a lot of architects/designers out there that would love to have decent brick, wood, marble, tile, etc. Greg/Gus…anything? Steve Ormonde
#44652From: Paul LindMay 25, 1993 2:33 PM
Steve, There are no doubt a number of companies and individuals working on various IPAS routines including .sxp's, I know of at least one, probably two, but they aren't shipping yet. Paul

Thanks Paul, Maybe we'll see something at the AEC show or Siggraph… Steve Ormonde

We certainly could write IPAS versions of all our other file format translators… among other things! I look forward to assembling the cash to invest in these high-falutin' flat mode compilers so we can write IPAS routines.

Steve, If you're looking to use RenderMan shaders, give the folks at the VALIS Group a call. They make excellent shaders for RenderMan, but they also advertise using these with Autodesk products. Which products? I'm not sure, but suspect it may be AutoCAD to RenderMan. Still, they might know of a way to use their math inside of 3D Studio's rendering engine. The VALIS Group is in Point Richmond CA (across the Bay from Sausalito) and can be reached at 510/236-4124. Regards, John D.

John, You're right, Valis Group does create some incredible rman shaders (we were using, hmhmm, trying to use rman before we jumped over to 3DS). It would make sense that they might create some 3ds .sxp's. I'll give Rosanne a call! Steve Ormonde

Greg, >We've been running both 3DS, ACAD, Windows, Ani Pro, etc. on the same >systems on a network with no problems for years – with only one config.sys >and autoexec.bat! No problem! Gee, that's great Greg, but that doesn't help me much! Would you mind elaborating? How is your config.sys and autoexec.bat setup? Thanks. I know, I know. If you upload your files, I owe you another lunch! <g> Steve Ormonde

Steve: Run OPTIMIZE that comes with QEMM386 first, that should get you the basics. After that, the only thing you will need to do is to exclude any memory areas for graphics cards, networks, etc. QEMM AN will do an analysis of your memory, and recommend other areas to include / exclude. MANIFEST will show you your interrupts, addresses, etc. for other problems. Good luck, Greg Pyros

My setup is similar to Gregs, using QEMM386. I don't know about John's though! <g> Nik

Thanks Nik! What type of parameters are you using with QEMM? Steve Ormonde

Does any one know/care if 3DS will ever be out with a Windows/NT version? Iwas reading yesterday in the latest edition of PC magazine that this new #D s/w is out fow Windows and it was highly recommended and cost about 1/3. Sanjeev. 70720, 3011.
#44485From: ALAN IGLESIASMay 23, 1993 11:15 AM
Sanjeev, I haven't a clue about Adesk's plans for it's products, but these things should be noted: Neither Pixar's Typestry, nor Renderman represent a true full-featured production-oriented complete 3D package of the likes of 3D Studio. These programs are niche-oriented and designed for doing relatively specific 3D operations, so a direct comparison with 3DS is just not valid, IMHO. I would suggest a wait-and-see attitude (NT is still Not There!<g>). I'm sure things will sort themselves out to the benefit/liking of most users, eventually… -Alan Iglesias

>…new 3D s/w is out fow Windows and it was highly recommended and cost >about 1/3. Highly recommended for doing what? I've only seen one program that looked good under NT and that was Intergraph. It has a pretty slick renderer with an awesome interface. One thing that I remember most (I saw it at fall comdex) was its ability to do a raytraced rendering and change the finish material _without_ having to rerender it! For example, you render a room with a shiny wood floor and a mirror on the wall. Change the shiny wood to shiny marble and ALL the reflectiions change _without_ waiting for a rerender!! Absolutely incredible. Steve Ormonde

DEVICE=C:\qemm\QEMM386.SYS ram This is only one machine – my home machine. If I remember, I'll see what I have at work and let you know. I use Windows and Autodesk software on all my machines. The ones at work are probably going to have more parameters because I've run OPTIMIZE and have a Stealth parameter. Nik

Thanks Nik! I installed Windows earlier and, using QEMM's defaults from optimize _and_ excluding B000-B7FF, runs both 3ds and windows with no problems! Steve Ormonde
#44642From: Nik Grant [adesk]May 25, 1993 12:19 PM
See? That wasn't so bad after all! Nik
#44668From: Dan PinalMay 25, 1993 8:18 PM
There is a new WINHIRAM.VXD file for QEMM use with Windows. Once installed you, QEMM will no longer require excluding B000-B7FF to be compatible with Windows.
#44693From: Steve OrmondeMay 26, 1993 9:39 AM
Thanks Dan! I'll give Q'deck a call for the new winhiram.vxd right away! Steve Ormonde

Steve: And don't forget to set EMBMEM to 16 megs if you have that much on your machine, it defaults to only 12 and Windows likes more than that! Greg Pyros
