#CLtd Woes

Can anyone give me information on a Miniscribe 8425 20 meg HD? I need all of
the information like:
number of cylenders
number of heads (surfaces)
any and all information pertaining to this drive. I am connecting this
drive up to a C Ltd. SCSI Controller and would like a mountlist (and the
CLTD.device too!) for this particular drive. Any and all help is appre-
ciated!! Thanks.

According to Winn Rosch's Hardware Bible the specs are:
Cylinders: 615 Heads: 4 Sectors: 17
Write Precomp: 128 Landing Zone: 663 Capacity: 21MB
This is not a SCSI drive (or you wouldn't need this data, IT would tell
you), but, I believe, an MFM drive. If the card you mention will accept
MFM/RLL drives, then the first line of info I posted should be all you
need. If it needs a SCSI drive, you are going to need some sort of adapter
to convert (and it probably won't be worth the effort).

Hmmm…Thats interesting, because this drive was came out of a Mac. Hasn't
Mac always been SCSI? Correct me if I am wrong with this. The information
that you provided should help out (I hope 🙂 )

Mac has always "been scsi," but they "took some liberties" with the scsi
specification (like just about ignored it completely). Add to that, drive
manufactures that "tuned" their drives to work with the Mac system, and
you have real trouble for a system that complies with the scsi spec.

Thanks for the information….being as I havn't yet gotten this drive to
format, and I only paid $20 for it ($1/Meg), I think that it's going to get
sold. Thanks again, Quantum, here I come!

What C-Ltd controller are you using? It has been a few years since I used
any of the C-Ltd stuff so I don't know if I can be of much help.
Does the controller have the adaptec MFM/SCSI board?

This may sound a little silly, but how would I tell? I know hardware and
all, but I don't think that I can tell on this one <VBG>.

The scsi controllers with have a dual inline 50 header on the board (Berg
connector). They will usually have a DB-25 on the board mounting plate.
The Kronos controller will have the word Kronos on the card I believe (I
can't tell you for sure as I loaned my Kronos card to someone). The
Kronos is also a "half-length" card (though it may or may not have a full
length frame). The C-Ltd controller that predates the Kronos is a full
length card (that is the circuit board itself is full length) but it very
short (in height) and sparsely populated.
I don't know what C-Ltd did with the Adaptec controller. I suspect that
it was mounted on the drive itself (the only ones that I ever saw were
exactly the size of a 5.25 inch drive). The Adaptec will have a 50 pin
Berg connector and then a set of connectors for the ST-506 interface type
drives (same arrangment that you will see on an old PC type disk
controller).

I am pretty sure that I have the SCSI controller now that you've given me the
info. It has the DB25 and the 50 pin connectors on the board and I don't see
the name 'Kronos' anywhere on the board. I'm going to assume also, that this
board will not autoboot. Am I correct in this assumption? ard will not

Yes, you are correct. The original C-Ltd board will not autoboot.
