I've successfully formated a tape and recorded to my EVO-9650 using SoftVTR,
but for the life of me I can't get the 9650 to display any menus. Is thre some
special trick to this?

Bailey, there is a trick.
The menus will not show up using the S video cord. Use the LINE OUT connection
on back of the 9650 and the menu will appear.
