At the time, about a year ago, I also had the 2Mb memory expansion. I'd
assumed it would likely be needed.
Despite numerous phone calls to SILICA, they were unable to supply me with
clear instructions on getting the RICOH to work with the AMIGA. In the end
I had to send it back and get a refund as I was not at all happy with the
lack of technical support. They suggested that I run it in Epson dot
matrix emulation – but I had bought a RICOH 400dpi and I wanted a RICOH
400dpi and wasn't getting it. I never understood why they advertised it so
heavily in the AMIGA mags either, because this problem must have affected
dozens of people before me and they still had not come up with a
solution.
Now I use the Canon bubblejet BJ10 – great on text print but crummy on
photos, they come out all streaky.
A laser printer is something very much on the backburner now for me!

I bought a Ricoh LP1200 on the strength of the adverts but to start didn't
get the extra 2mb expansion. The driver used was the HPLaser one in this
forum by Kelly Jordan. Kelly did a quick mod which enabled the driver to
do 400dpi and it worked absolutely fine. So I got the extra 2mb of ram and
I havn't a single word of complaint. In fact I'm well into my 2nd toner
cart having done over 10,000 pages.
Having said all that I can't see what was the difficulty in getting your
printer to work with an Amiga. Just plug in and go for me. Hmmmm…

I always figured that if I got a laser printer, then it wouyld be a
RICOH – there now exists, I beleive, a printer driver for the AMIGA.
I was not a member of CI$ at the time, though I wish I had been.
At 400dpi, how do photographs look? How well do they print out? I tend
to judge printing devices by how well they print scanned-in
photographs. Good quality text is easy for most printers now these
days but a goodly printed photograph is a rarity.

I've got a Datascan scanner but havn't tried yet with a pic. I'll have a
go at one and let you know.

I use the POWER 64 greys hand scanner and get quite good results from
it – though only when printed on a superior printer or a linotronic.
The CANON I have just can't produce photos well enough.
