Does anyone have a handle on what CD-Recordable developments there have been since Byte did its special feature three or four months ago? Has anybody seen any interesting product announcements since then? Thanks Paul Blake

Paul, The February Byte articles were a landmark of CD-R research. If anyone asks me about CD-R I always refer them to this issue as "The CD-R Bible". All of the articles are still the most current in the field. The only update I can think of is that the CD-Studio by Young Minds(Reviewed Feb'93, BYTE) is now available with a GUI interface for MS-DOS. This is a software-hardware solution for CD-ROM premastering and CD-R creation. One of the driving forces in this field is the price of blank media. At the SIGCAT meeting in Gaithersberg, MD the lowest price for a 60 minute blank was $28.00. The concensus of opinion amongst the vendors is that the price of media will drop to $5-$10 by December '93. This is due the fact that many companies are now manufacturing the media where only two were in existance last year. John

As someone trying to learn about the new world of writing on CD-ROMs I'm interested in reading the Feb issue of Byte magazine, but unfortunately I don't subscribe to it (you just can't buy them all)…. Anyway, is there anyone that would be willing to copy the articles refering to CD-R and send them to me. Of course, I would pay any reproduction and postage charges… Adva<Thanks>nce, Tom….

I wish I still had some! Even one copy. . . What I strongly reccommend to all interested parties is to visit their local public or university library. They even have copy machines. John

Paul, Why don't you check out the new CDVEN (CDROM VENDORS) forum? Several of us section leaders are at COMDEX this week, and I'm sure there's going to be some of the latest & greatest discussed there in the next week or so. Kathy Cochrane The One-Off CD Shops

Paul, Well yes, there _have_ been some neat new things since that Byte article (which was well done by the way). Most notable to me are 1) The increase in the number of service shops around which compete for business making it harder than ever to justify the purchase of a system for personal use. 2) The release of the Pinicle system and the lowering of prices of CDRs as a whole, even if problems in the cheaper units do cause many customers trouble. 3) The release of a reliable compression program which now allows 1.3 GB of data or more to be stored on a single CD-ROM with no performance deterioration. 4) The increase in run only engines for CD which makes distribution easier and cheaper than ever and on multiple platforms to boot.
