Toshiba 3401 problems

I'm having problems getting my new Toshiba 3401E (external) to work right. The
current problem is that it won't let me access subdirectories on the CD-ROM
disks if they are more than one level below the root directory, and it won't
let me go back up to the root directory. Needless to say, this has also caused
several programs not to run.
Here's what I'm running: Controller – Always IN2000 with most recent EPROM and
ROM, I have tried it both terminated and not, with no real difference in
results. Hard Drive – internal Maxtor 210M SCSI drive, SCSI ID 0, terminated.
External Toshiba 3401E connected with Macintosh (grey) SCSI cable, terminated
externally both with plug on unused port and pass-through plug on port in use
(have tried with one or the other, no difference in results), not terminated
internally. MSCDEX – version 2.22. DOS version 6 (had same problem prior to
upgrade). Currently using CDROM.SYS. I wanted to use Corel SCSI and their
ASPI driver, but Corel doesn't recognize the existence of the CD-ROM drive when
it scans the SCSI bus.
Any ideas anyone? My best guess is that I have a defective CDROM drive. The
people at Always and Corel failed to figure out why the ASPI driver keeps the
CDROM from showing up on the scan of the SCSI bus, and now I'm having this even
more fundamental problem.

What's the SCSI id of the CD-ROM — try 2 thru 6. If it's 1, your
controller may be "recognizing" the CD-ROM as a variant of a hard
drive.

Thanks for the thought, but I've tried several other SCSI IDs,
same problem. The SCSI bus scan zips through everything except the
one the CDROM is set for, and then takes 3-5 minutes to decide
there's nothing at the one where the CDROM is. I only have this
problem when I've loaded ASPI – I can use the non-ASPI driver
(CDROM.SYS) without any major problems. It just doesn't have any of
the more advanced features that I bought the 3401 for (such as CD
audio).
