If I want to play a *.fli file in a product such as PowerPoint for windows I must do it through the Microsoft Media Player. Is this right? Is there no way to setup Autodesk animater as an OLE server? Media Player just doesn't do a good job with flic files! Thanks to anyone that can enlighten me.

You are correct, Animator Player can not be an OLE server. For detailed instructions on how to use the Media PLayer as a work around, download FLICIN.TXT. Why do you say the Media player doesn't do a good job? It actually uses the exact same player, we are just taking advantage of its OLE capabilities. It should be exactly the same, except it will have a different default icon. -Brian

The problem is when I use the Media Player to play a flic file I get horrible color shifts in the background. (I am using 256 colors). Also, in PowerPoint, Harvard Graphics 2.0, Freelance and Action I cannot get a flic file to be placed anywhere except in the middle of the screen. None of these problems happen when I use AVI files but it appears that for the work I am doing I must use flic files. I thought that if I could get the Animator Player to run OLE it might sovle some of these problems. I will down load the recomended text, and please advise me more if you can, I am mostly concerned about the color shifts–I don't know why they are happening but need a work around. Thanks for the quick reply. One more question I have SST (Ask Me software) which uses version 1.01.31 of Animator Player to drive its flic files, I recently downloaded from you library version 1.10 so that I could use the Animator stand alone. However now when I run SST I get an error in AAVGA.DLL. Since I need to develop some presentations using SST (don't ask me why?!) I will have to re-install the orginal disks to fix this problem…I think? If I do this will Animator Player ver 1.10 run using this older AAVGA.DLL? Thanks again.

Curtis, The color shifts you are seeing are because of the way the Windows color Palette reacts with the FLC files. Out of the 256 color palette, Windows reserves the first 10 and last 10 palette positions for it's own use. So when you load FLC file which use the same positions, there are conflicts. Convert your animations to use a palette of 236 colors, leaving the first ten and last ten positions unused within the animaton. Also, a common palette for each frame of the animation (of 236 colors) will help as well. For your ASK ME presentation, it should work exacly the same with the updated drivers, unless the ASK ME people modified the files in some way. Ask the if they did, if so, you will need to use their drivers. If not, than the new drivers should work fine, there is something else that must have happened when you installed the drivers to mess up the environment. -Brian

Thanks for the Help! Could the driver problem be related to my use of DoubleSpace compression?

"Could the driver problem be related to my use of DoubleSpace compression?" Your problems should not be related to your use of DoubleSpace. I suppose it's possible that a file is corrupted somewhere along the line, but DOS 6.2 DoubleSpace works "properly" on my system. Nik

>> Could the driver problem be related to my use of DoubleSpace compression?<< Doubtful, but anything is possible when computers are involved. The only way it could be related is if the new drivers you loaded are corrupted or something. -Brian

Brian, How to convert flc to 236 colors? Mei-Tien

"How to convert flc to 236 colors?" The easiest way is through our Windows player. The File menu has an "Anim Convert…" option which does it for you automatically. If you have AAPro only, then you must SQUEEZE the palette over time to 236 colors from 256. Then you must CUT the palette, define a 236 color cluster which does not include the first or last 10 colors, then PASTE over time. Finally, make a cluster of the 1st 10 and last 10 colors and paste black over time, and save the results. As I said, it's easier with the player… (WINPLA.EXE on this forum if you don't have it). Nik

What is the best way to convert the color palette to meet this requirement? I need to convert roughly 200 flic files! Paul
