I would not recomend trying to learn AutoCad and 3ds at the same time, try to learn 3ds and then a 2D cad program like Generic cad first. You will find the same concepts in AutoCad and any other cad type program but 3ds has the most powerful tools for 3d if you can get the hang of them. Making Models is only 1/3 of the fun learning Mapping and How to make "good" materials not to mention Keyframe animation is an art unto itself. I find that by reading books on CAD, 3ds and other related topics I get an understanding how to create a certain look or effect and I can work through it in my mind. but untill I start working on it I have no idea about the little problems that pop up now and again. I work on ideas that showcase certain concepts just to understand them and get a hands on try at them and things sometimes don't workout, that should not stop you because now you know how not to do it and are getting closer the the right way to do it. I belive that any time spent using a program like 3ds or AutoCad is good for you no matter what you're doing with it, you get more experence using the interface and build up speed. I remember when I first got Rel. 2 I had to refer to the books all the time, just to do the most basic things. Just remember that with experience comes age, and this is why we all should respect our elders. I think one the best things about 3ds is the fact the if you can envision what you want to do you can do it, it just takes time and practice. Some times I get so many Ideas going I can't get any one done and on tape. hang in there and keep trying!!!!!

Dear Richard, I have been using AutoCAD 12 with AME after it was released to make 54 3D drawings of cars, trucks, and vans. I have been using 3D Studio since the day before last Thanksgiving but I had a few problems. I thought the "Inside 3D Studio" book would help me create realistic materials, renderings, and animations but I am not a good artist. I am MAD at Mommy for making me go to work and rebuild carburetors instead of letting me stay home and learn how to use 3D Studio and AutoCAD. Jeffrey.
