#IVS Vector Info?

I'm planning to buy an accellerator soon. I was thinking of the GVP
GForce 40/40/4 until I saw the ads for the IVS Vector which looks pretty
good. I particularly like the ability to use the SCSI and 32 bit RAM on
the accellerator when in 68000 mode.
On the other hand, things tend to look good in ads (why else would they
make them, eh?). So I'm interested in reading comments from users of the
IVS Vector or independent reviews of the Vector. Does anyone here use a
Vector? How is it? Or does anyone here know of any reviews of this
product?
I got a vector 68030/68881 and 16 megs of mem for a good price. When I run
sysinfo (from here) I get a speed of 0.97 of that of a 3000. While I have
a MMU, the vector will map kickstart into 32 bit without the MMU. When you
reboot, if you hold the right amiga key down, the vector gives you a menu,
where you can go to 68000 mode. The reason I got 16 megs was that even
though there are 8 SIMM slots, you have to exand using either 4 of 8 of
them. I need 8 megs (Toaster), but then I loose future expandability
(unless I replace the 1 meg SIMMS with 4 meg SIMMS). On the other hand,
the regular SIMMS are much cheaper than the GVP SIMMS. And you can add the
DKB memory board latter for a total of 144 megs (when memory is cheaper ).
Is there any information in the documentation which addresses the issue
of memory limits when using the 68000 with an XT BridgeBoard? (I know
that when using the BB on my unaccelerated system I am limited to 6 megs
of fast RAM.) If I get the Vector with 8 or 16 megs will I still be
limited to 6 megs of fast RAM in 68000 mode? (Not that it really matters.
I can't recall ever having run out of RAM with 7 megs total.)
You have to loose 4 meg block out of the 8 when going to 68000 to use with
the bridgeboard. The max you can ever get in the 68000 mode is 8 megs.
The vector board has a jumper to let you set how much memory is visible in
68000 mode, 4 Mb or 8 Mb. You set the jumper for 4 Mb and have no problem
with the bridgeboard. In 68030 mode it's all mapped into a higher memory
space so there isn't a conflict at all.

How much memory do you have on the vector board? I have 16 megs, and can
only get vd0: or rad: to work if I boot the vector up without any fastram
(I have 2 megs of Chip).
I've only got 4 megs at the moment. A question does pop to mind, what do
you have the settings at for the maximum size for vd0: ? Since it has been
around for quite a while, it could have hard limits inside it for max size
<= 8 Megs. I don't know, but will check the documentation. You should also
post a message for ASDG over on the AmigaVend forum.
They should be able to help since they wrote it.

I have set it from 1.5 megs (the default setting) to 8 megs. The document
include with the vd0: file said that It was a version that allowed the full
8 meg size. I talked to IVS tech support and he thought maybe the
autoconfig of the 16 megs was before the internal checking for RAD or VD0,
Anyway, it sounds like a good suggestion to talk to ASDG.
Let us know what you find out from them. I plan to increase the amount of
memory on my board (sooner or later).

I was under the impression that the IVS Vector came with a 68882, and
not a 68881, as you stated in your message to Ernie.

It seems that Memory world supplies the 68030 instead of the 680something30
and instead gives you a 68881 instead of the 68882.

That explains it. In the IVS Vector upgrade form I received, it said it
came with a 68882.

I've got a G-Force 040 for the A2000 for sale for $1885, with 4 megs
memory, extra paralle and serial ports, and SCSI adapter…

Could you compare the G-Force 040/ 2000 combo to the 4000 in speed?
I am at the point where I have to make several decisions regarding
upgrading my equipment. I have 2000s and 3000s. I will probably get at
least one DMI Vivid 24 board. With that board in a 2000 or 3000 I
essentially bypass the need for the graphics capability of the 4000 as the
Vivid 24 (a graphics co-processor, not a frame buffer) displays 24 bit
video very fast.
Disregarding the AGA chipset, how does a 2000 or 3000 with the G-Force 040
card compare to the 4000?
