#Fax/silent answer help

Help, I have phone & answering (with Radio Shack part on it & the # of
rings set up you suggested) in double plug in house, computer & Supra
fax/modrm with silent answer chip in sudio (same tel line of course).
I tested silent answer & it didn't work. Discovered S0 wasn't prgramed to
=6. Does it have to be? Is this all I have to do. Do I change GPFax
initializing string? sorry for all these dumb questions but I can't find
any updated docs for their upgrades. Supra was fairly clear that you had
to program S0 to the # of rings for fax.
I have no problem with incoming faxes if I know they're coming and check
"AutoAnswer" AND answering machine isn't on (natch).

One thing I left out is that the answering machine has to hang up when
the Supra picks up the line. If not silent answer will not work. Is this
the Radio Shack part you speak of?

GPFax resets the modem when you start the program. All set-up should be
done in the Environment and Options menus. My init string in GPFax is
AAT&F2E0. I have rings set for five and in Options you should have the
mode string set for "SilentAn".
My answering machine answers on three. If a fax tone is heard the Supra
picks up and the answering machine should immediately hang up.

So you are saying that the answering machine will answer the line but the
Supra is not reacting to the FAX tones calling in?
By the way I am using "GPFax 2.342 Supra 27.7.93". Does this help???

Gary,
I have the exact set up you have (yes the RS part makes answer machine
hangup), except cheap answering machine defauts to 4 rings with no setting
ability, so I have GPfax set to 6 rings.
Yes, the machine picks up, I send the fax & we get an error meaassage &
the little paper from the sending fax saying it was online 14 or so
seconds..
Is it possible that we are not leaving enough time (a few seconds) BEFORE
the answering machine starts it's message? I read something like that from
the techie on Modemvendor forum. Or maybe RS part doesn't cut it out fast
enough? Or what?

It is quite possible that the answering machine is not releasing the line
soon enough. What you may try is to answer the phone yourself. When you
hear fax tones, hang up and let the modem take over. Answer the line in
the same amount of rings your answering machine does. If you receive the
fax correctly, with the modem, you now have a much better idea of what
your problem is…

Gary,
Good idea, except I'm sending the fax at library & my man is a complete
non computer person <G>. Well, I guess I could ask librarian to send it.
I'm also going to try the 2 seconds of "dead air" before message method.

Coming in late on your fax travails…yes, leave 2 seconds (at least)of
"dead air" at the beginning of your answering tape so that the Supra can
"hear" the CNG tone from the sending fax. It's not a problem with the RS
part (it won't hang up UNTIL your fax modem comes on line). Mine works
fine, but there are apparently some fax machines that the Supra just won't
talk to.

thanks. May solve problem. i already know Supra does work with this fax
machine because i have used it as a test before.
BTW loved your printer article in AW. Unfortunately it didn't help me
decide…I still want both <G>.

Gracia,
Try using a new tape for your answering machine and clean the heads. It
is possible that the unrecorded part of your message tape makes too much
noise.
