How can I print an envelope on a DeskJet 500? The Envelope loading
function of the DJ loads it so it's right under the print head. All my
printing utilities insist on sucking up a page out of the regular paper
tray.

Paul,
You have to remove the paper from the tray, in order to get the envelope
feed to work correctly.

I tried that. It just spits out the envelope then tries to print. What
software and driver have you tried?

I own a 500C and print enveloped all of the time. What I do is remove
the plastic cover and place the envelope in the envelope guide. Then I
make sure the envelope is pressing against the rubber rollers and then
press the envelope button. It loads the envelope and when I tell my
program to print it does so with lovely results.
The only variable I can think of that may have any bearing on this
situation is that I use printmanger. I use the standard CBM driver
included with 3.0 and the software I print with is Final Writer release 2.

I use a DJ-550C and PageStream to print envelopes with no problems.

How does PageStream know it's an envelope? I'll postion the envelope using
the up/down arrows at the same time, then send the printed page, the
printer then spits out the envelope and tries to grab a sheet from the
empty paper tray.
Do I need to send a non-standard page size or instruction? Can you take a
look at what driver you are using?

It knows it's an envelop because I sized it as an envelope and positioned it
vertically. I'm using the PageStream HP DeskJet550C v2.0.3 driver.
You flipped the envelope graphic 90 degrees? Hmmm, I must be way off base,
at least I was getting the address across what was suppose to be an
envelope.
I'll try flipping and see what happens. Do you feed the envelope before
the print with the up/down arrows?

I'm not sure what you are asking. I put the envelopes into the paper drawer as
instructed (right side, flap up, flap on right side). In PageStream I define a
page the size the an envelope, then type in the info. I then flip the "page"
90 degrees so that the long edge becomes the height rather than the width (and
the writing is now sideways), then I print. Perfect every time.
Hmmm….Well, I mostly keep HP_500C, as my driver, despite the fact that I
don't have a color DJ. I also use Better_DJ. The Better_DJ, is pretty
old, I got it from a file area when PeopleLink was still around. Both,
should be in the library somewhere. All my software works with them
(ProWrite, ProDraw, Turbotext,…any program that uses the printer. What
driver are you using. (BTW, I have a DeskJet Plus).

Paul,
I have an HP Deskjet 500C. WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS prints envelopes
just fine from the 386 bridgeboard. I have not tried any other software
yet.

I'm dragging my DeskJet out to the garage where I have the carcass of a
286 AT. Plopped a 486 into the machine and bought three I/O cards for $10
a piece. I found Word Something 5.0 on the harddrive and a PD DeskJet
envelope printer.
Good grief, that case is a battle tank, weighs a ton-point-two. The
Harddrives have fancy little drawer slides.
You like that BridgeBoard 🙂 I remember when you started that project,
you ended up with a nice multi I/O card. How long has it been?
