#Buster Replacement

I have a socketed Buster rev -09. If I replace this
Buster with a rev -11 will all my problems be gone
or are their other problems with the motherboard??
Any comments appreciated.

There are problems with the CPU daughter cards. I believe version 3.1 is
what you should have, but even then you won't have the latest PAL fixes
(which were made only since Janurary or Febuary). The PAL fixes aren't
critical, but they are nice.

What non-critical things do the PAL's fix?

It's not that they fix non-critical things, it's that you can live without
the fix 🙂
The answer is very technical. If you're a technical type, Haynie could
explain it to you better than I. If your not, this baby-talk explanation
should do.
The 040 daughter card basically has to convert 040-talk to 030-talk, since
the A4k motherboard talks 030-talk. The PALs are a big part of this. With
the first production release, there were several little timing glitches
and potential extra delays, to the point that the 4091 didn't really work.
The 3.1 board fixed most of them. An additional bug was found that, when
fixed, can give the CPU a little more time, enough that there is
measurably more CPU available during disk access and that serial interupts
are less of a problem (those with Fastlanes or 4091s downloading 14.4 to a
SCSI drive have probably noticed increased file transfer errors).

Well it depends on what you are going to do with your revision -11 Buster.
If you intend on getting a 4091 SCSI-II controller, you must also have a
rev 3.1 processor board. This is the 68040 daughterboard that plugs into
the motherboard. Timing problems with the older 3.0 processor board caused
major problems with the 4091 controller.

Had a conversation with Joe from Util. Unltd. on that same subject, ie.
Buster Rev-09/11 swap, and I'm bummed; after all, now that C= is gone the
3.1 boards are going to be a real 'mother' to get… (Aw geesh, I had to
say that!<VBG>) I also was not aware that the 3.1 was needed to run the
4091 controller, perhaps someone will smile kindly upon us and provide a
source for 3.1 boards.

I imagine after awhile, even Rev -11 Buster's are going to be quite
scarce, not to mention 4000 mother/processor boards. I'm just glad I was
able to get my 4000 upgraded before CBM pulled the plug. Hopefully that
rumored asian buyer will decide there needs to be a better supply of parts
than what's currently available.
