#lighting design?

A friend is working with a theatre set designer, and they are looking for a program to use for visualizing different lighting designs and sets. As it stands, they would like to be able to use standard lighting parameters, with inputs so that when all is arranged, the rendered scene will acurately predict the actual set if built. Does anyone know of an IPAS routine that will allow input of more specific lighting parameters, or if there is a program that could handle this type of task? Thanks for any hints. Doug

Doug, << lighting IPAS to predict…? >> Sorry. Not yet. However, there is a great shareware lighting IPAS3 written by Mark Meier, in the "3D Studio" section of the lib, which allows you to place, set, modify lights by groupings (sets). Check it out. Write him an e-mail and see what happens. jonas[adesk]

Thanks for the suggestion. Doug

modelbox do this all the time. I visualise a large number of West End s Industrials, and have had lighting designers such as David Hersey working in the office on show visualisations. We have a renderfarm and frame animate to CRV Laserdisc. I am shortly going to visualise all the scene changes for the new Cameron Mackintosh production of Oliver at the London Palladium. (Blah blah…) We have an extensive wishlist with regard to 3D Studio, to enable better reproduction of theatre and performance lighting, most of which centre around programming lighting cues, operating lights in groups, translating real colour filters to RGB values, allowing for colour temperature changes as lights dim, operating groups of lights, reproducing light effects in smoke and vapours and dealing with moving lights. We have work-arounds for most of these, and have just downloaded the IPAS Jonas mentioned, but we would love to talk to any enterprising IPAS programmers out there who feel they could help. We produce a lighting design add-on for AutoCAD at present – called AutoLight and may well be interested in backing a 3D Studio-based lighting design package if it had sufficient features. I look forward to hearing from you… Regards Peter

Peter, You might want to contact Mark Meier as he has written an IPAS on lighting, which has recieved much favorable attention. His CIS # is 76330,3402. I think he would be happy to work with you to develop it further, especially as you have some challenging requirements. -JE

>> written an IPAS on lighting, I DL'd LTUTIL.ZIP a couple of weeks ago, ran into some problems with bad CRC, and went back this week to get it, and I can't find the file! Do you recall what library section it was in? Or could you (or Mark Meier if you're listening) e-mail it to me? I think it was pretty small in size, and it sounded extremely useful.

David, << I DL'd LTUTIL.ZIP a couple of weeks ago, ran into some problems with bad CRC, and went back this week to get it, and I can't find the file! Do you recall what library section it was in? >> Since it's IPAS source code, you'll find it in the "software dev kits" section of the libs. Don't forget to check out LTFIX.zip, a Yost Group upload patch to support lighting in the same section. jonas[adesk]

>> Since it's IPAS source code, you'll find it in the "software dev kits" >> section of the libs. No, that's not the one I'm looking for. I DL'd LTUTIL.ZIP which was the compiled version of that. I ran into a CRC problem when unzipping it, so I went back to try again and I can't find it.

LTUTIL.zip is in "3D Studio" section of the libs.

>> LTUTIL.zip << Thanks for the help. My manual CIS navigation is pretty poor. If my front-end fails me for any reason, I'm completely lost!

David, << My manual CIS navigation is pretty poor. >> I use wincim and I like it. I can click on library/search/lt*.*, restrict the date range to lets say since 01/01/94, specify all library sections and viola.. a list of "hits" shows up. Wincim may not be great for all things but searching the libs with it is a no brainer. It works the same for filenames/keywords or the contributor. FWIW dept. jonas[adesk]

I'll pass this message on to the people who were asking me, but in the meanwhile, what is Modelbox? Doug

Modelbox is the name of the company. We've been doing this stuff for arouns seven years. Working mainly in the theatre. I used to be a Technical Manager at the National theatre, and we do try to emphasise how we can help a production rather than just appear as techno-freaks! 3DS is a big thing for us and has meant we have significantly expanded our customer base. We have a render farm and now do contract rendering for people – but the theatre is still our first love… Thanks for asking – if you want to know any more I'd love to help out. (Huge ego problem) Regards Peter

Thanks for the description. I'll get back to you in a little while after I pass this on. Doug
