Using 3DS for VR
7 messages in this thread
I'm not sure this is the section, but I'm looking to do one of two things. Is
there a way to use 3DS flics interactively. I'd like to create a series of
short flics that are controlled interactively by the user–similar to AAWIN's
script function but more user-oriented. Or is this a feature that is used in
the VR environment?? What is the difference between standard FLC/FLI's and the
VR sections??
Thanks,
Chris
Chris,

Some games give you the feel of VR. They do this by modeling a scene
and prerendering a large number of restricted areas of movement and
then limiting your movement and displaying the appropriate flc. Other
packages do not limit your movement but are forced to render the scene
in realtime. In order to keep up with the feeling of VR they may use
wireframe, flat shading, etc. to at least give you a few frames per
second of screen refresh. Some applications can use hardware
accellerators to improve the screen refresh rate.

Does Autodesk have software that allows that type of control and
interactivity?? If not, who does?? What you just suggested is what I want to
do but I've had a difficult time finding "presentation" software or other
software that provides seamless transfer between flics. How is the transfer
between flics initiated?? Is there button control somewhere on the screen,
keyboard interaction, etc???
Thanks,
Chris

Autodesk sells the Cyberspace Developer Kit (CDK). It is an object-oriented
programming library for creating interactive virtual reality applications. It
provides a unified, comprehensive set of classes that professional developers
can combine and extend to make finished applications for a variety of hardware
configurations.

How can we get information on the CDK?
Gerry Klug
There are a number of Autodesk Dealers who are authorized to sell the CDK. You
can call 800-879-4233 and ask for one in your area, they will help you.

Chris,
Have you tried looking at GRASP? This is a grapics and presentation oriented
programming lanuage that can play FLI and FLC files. Using this program you
could design an interactive interface that controls the playback of FL?
files, including frame by frame control and play speed.
GRASP is supported here on CIS in the Graphics Vendors forum. I believe you
can just GO GRASP to get there.
Hope this helps,
Steven
