Does 1.25 seem too low for monitor gamma? All of my renderings are too dark,
yet the grey boxes say 1.25 is correct. I must still be missing something…

1.25 seems does seem low. I've found, when it doubt, set it for 1.80, and don't
lose sleep over it. Are you viewing your renderings on your monitor, or on a
framebuffer? Have you checked the contrast & brightness settings of your
monitor?

I preview renderings on my computer monitor, and the contrast and brightness
levels are normal (near as I can tell). Why would the grey boxes be telling me
that my gamma should be 1.25? I guess my problem is that I have no reference,
except the grey boxes, and they don't seem to be within a stone's throw of
being accurate. I will set it (for now) at 1.8, I would appreciate any help
ya'll could give in the fine-tuning. Thanks!

John,
PMJI, but what display or framebuffer are you using, and is it displaying
24-bit ? Does it feature hardware gamma correction ? What method have you used
to substantiate that brightness/contrast are set correctly ? What monitor are
you using ? Do your renderings look correct when displayed from an application
other than 3DS ? Have you checked them on another system/display ? Are you
certain that your lighting is positioned and adjusted accurately as well as
your surface attributes ? Have you checked rendering with just omni lights, no
falloff, etc.? What value is entered in the NEXT field after the display gamma
using the matching swatches (framebuffer)? Do the renderings look correct with
Gamma set at 1.8 AND also look correct when displayed from another application
? If so, forget about it. These are questions to answer in determining your
problem.

BILL
Thanks for the reply —
I've gone through all of these questions, this is a rather strange experience.
I'm using the Viper VLB with a Tri-Star monitor (which I believe is made by
Samsung)
I don't see any simple reason why this thing would be giving me the strange
gamma output. 1.25 is really low! (a huge difference from 1.8!) I am using
an A/B switch for the monitor, but that still shouldn't make that much of a
difference. 1.8 gives me a good-quality rendering, so for now I'm going to
stick with that setting, but I would sure like to know why the calibration is
so far off. Thanks again–

Joseph,
<< I've gone through all of these questions >>
I, nor likely anyone else can help you if you don't post the answers to those
questions. The gamma-matching device is just intended to be a possibly useful
tool. If you can find a gamma setting which looks correct within 3DS AND
(important) also looks correct when displayed outside of 3DS AND looks correct
on another system, then forget about it – that's all that counts.
