Hey Evan,
A while ago, you told me the monitor I have from DEC was an O/EM from some
other company. Which company was that and do they have a 20/21 monitor able to
handle 1600×1200 at a reasonable refresh rate (+70kHz)?
The DEC 17" is/was made by Taxan. They no longer sell in the US, to my
knowledge.
There are very few monitors which will do 1600×1200 at 70+ Hz. Nanao makes one,
and I think Nokia does too. Oh, yea — Idek said they are coming out with one.
It might be available by now. I like most all of Idek's new monitors. I'm
using one now (a 21", but this model's only good up to 1600×1200 at 60 Hz.)

Great. Do you ever use it at 1600×1200? Is the 60Hz refresh rate enough? I ask
that based on the fact that this guy (DEC/Taxan) runs at 80/74 Hz and I guess
that's what makes it look so good (stable), but I keep running out of screen
real state. I wish I had a 8×6' LCD panel (and probably some super computer to
handle screens update).
I've seen the Nanao but as I far as I remember, it won't go down to VGA
scanning rate so you can't boot with it. Is it true?
The Nanao comes bundled with special Matrox MGA card that was designed to run
at the monitor's high refresh rates. It'll boot fine with that card, as far as
I know.

Oh great… A "special" controller? Nah… I will stay as far away from that as
I can. All I want is something as good as this DEC but larger (same DPI, just
more real state).
You should at least check the MGA II out. It's got a 200mhz refresh rate, or
something sick like that, and the combo has been getting stellar reviews, at
least all the ones I've read. They say it's better than anything they've yet
seen (of course, magazines are _not_ known for hyperbole <g>). It seems to be
a real screamer, although dos performance is less than stellar if you're trying
to play games (like we don't spend enough time in front of these infernal boxes
without playing games <g>).

I personally can't stand 60Hz. I've used the monitor at 1600×1280, but only
for testing.
Remember that on a typical monitor, the maximum resolution trades off refresh
rate. The Dec/Taxan will do 80Hz — but not at its top resolution.
The Nanao is typically bundled with a custom MGA which boots at a higher
frequency. (Thanks for reminding me.) Probably not a great idea, if you value
flexibility.
I'd take a look at the new Idek — they're supposed to have a high-bandwidth
unit hitting the market.
Just out of curiosity — is 1280×1024 not enough resolution for you?
