VGA monitor on 1200

I recently purchase a Magnavox SVGA monitor for my son to use on his 1200.
However, it is not at all obvious how to set the various preferences. We
are now to the point where we can run most programs, and load games which
use NTSC. However, most of the European games (in PAL) just jumble the
screen. The manuals are of no help at all. What monitors should I have
in the DEVS:monitors drawer, and what settings should I have in Screen
Mode and IPREFS in the Prefrences drawer? I am sure someone out there has
been through this before.

The Amiga's mode promotion, is a method of subsituting one screenmode for
another — for programs that can't (or don't) open screenmodes that the
users prefers.
It greatest problem with promoting a program's screen, is figuring out
that the program has opened a screen. Some games almost completely bypass
the Amiga's built-in OS software for controlling the chips that generate
the graphics — these games do their own thing.

There is a mode promotion utility called PPREFS.LHA, in LIB3, of
AmigaUSER.
PPrefs, will promote more programs than the Amiga's built-in promotion
software will. There will be games, that will not promote under any
condition.
Many games will scramble their graphics when run on the A1200. These
games can not be promoted, by they can be unscrambled. To unscramble
them, you can use a program like 'KILLAGA', or 'EMBEDDER', which simulate
the graphic system of a less adavnced Amiga.
Killaga, can be fould as KILAGA.LHA, in LIB11 of AmigaTECH.

Place only the monitors you can use, in the DEVS:monitors drawer.
Try placing NTSC, PAL, Multiscan, DblPAL, & DblNTSC, in DEVS:monitors.
If you VGA monitor has problems with syncing to DblPAL & DblNTSC, then
place the "VGA-only" file in the monitors drawer.
The VGA-Only, file is a program that alters the setting of all the other
VGA-using monitor drivers to be closer to the VGA standard.
The Screenmodes Pref, is only for selecting mode for the Workbench screen.
The Icontrol Pref, has a setting that activates the mode promotion
software. You won't need to set this, if you use PPREFS.
The IPrefs program runs automatically during a ADOS 3.0 boot-up
startup-sequence. It is one of the commands listed in the
startup-sequence script — to be run. Iprefs, loads the preference
settings selected by the user.
