I guess that falls under the SX-64 category! At least I could take it to
work with me… Airline usage would be out of the question tho! <g>
Is the A600 power consumption really THAT bad? how long could a typical
LT battery drive the A600 circutry? Are there steps that could be taken
to reduce the amount of power? (Like spinning down the HD?)
(I just don't quit do I? <g>)

Chris,
I really don't know what its consumption is, but I do recall discussions
about making it into a portable, and people from Commodore said that it
would not be possible because of the power consumption of the chips. They
said there would have to be some redesigning of the major chips before a
battery-powered notebook or laptop could be made. Maybe something about
needing CMOS chips? Did I get it right?

Don't look at me! I've put together a few electronic projects in my
day… but never created one from the "ground" up! Well at least we have
a partial answer "why"!

I have a 600 power supply here that says it draw 600ma. The outputs are rated
at 5v @ 3.0a, 12v @ 500ma, and -12v @ 100ma. I don't know how close to these
figures the actual current draw of the machine is though.

I would think those would be a "worse" case power consumption. You could
get an IDE HD in there and still not max out the supply, however.
So, does anyone still carry the A600? Or have they all sold out. (Doesn't
seem likely, but I haven't seen any ads any place for one!)

Yes, I just wonder how much headroom the gave themselves.

I got mine over a year ago, at a place which was liquidating all of their Amiga
stuff. I don't remember what I paid for it, but it was under $200 for an
A600HD/40. I haven't seen any for quite a while now.
This thing is quite portable, except for the big 'ol power supply. If I could
find some way to accelerate it, I might actually start using it.
