One of the best books I've seen on the subject is "Developing Online Help for
Windows" from SAMS Publishing.
Of course, nothing beats the "HAG" the Microsoft Help Authoring Guide. It's
available as (what else?) a Windows Help file. Download HAG.ZIP from the Trends
library in the PC Magazine EDITORIAL forum. (GO EDITOR)
There are a number of commericial programs out there for helping you to design
Help files. RoboHelp and Doc-to-Help are the best-known. There are also a
number of shareware programs that you can download from ZiffNet. Most of them
can be found in the Public Brand Software forums. (GO PBS). There is a copy of
Visual Help here in the Windows Sources Forum (VH.ZIP in Lib3) that allows you
to build Help files from scratch by using drag & drop techniques.
