New Horizons gone?
9 messages in this thread
I've just received a notice from one Amiga distributor (MicroPace) that New
Horizons software is no longer in business. When we tried to call them, the
phone was disconnected. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
NOTE: Please, I am *not* trying to start any flames, I just want to know if
what I heard is correct. (Since New Horizons handles Quarterback and we [IDI]
handle AmiBack, I wanted to make that clear.)

Please take a grain of salt with anything (repeat ANYTHING) you hear from
distributors – particularly Micro-PACE. The truth (or a contract, or an
agreement, or terms like "30 days") means nothing to them.
These distributors claim that someone is out of business whenever that company
stops extending them credit terms of payment. I know, they did it to us for
months.
I have no information regarding New Horizons. Instead of talking about it
here, why not ask in their vendor forum in Amiga Vendor?
Yes, I can back this up and it's not only MicroPace ripping off users and
suppliers (for instance take MacroSystem US,…). I allways ask myself how
those companies still have a good reputation. Oh well, you can't help it
if people want to believe it…
Wasn't distribution of Quarterback forwarded to someone else (Oxxi?)?
I think you'll see massive changes in the way things are sold in the US
because most known US distributors are not supporting the Amiga anymore
and simply ripping-off users and suppliers. In the end, the situation will
be pretty similar to the situation here in european several years ago.
Quality and good products will be distributed by small dealers importing
the stuff from elsewhere. Prices will be high as quantaties are low as the
US is not the main market anymore.

Wolf,
I was told that your >> Studio << software is now being distibuted
by NoahJi's, can you confirm this please, and do you (or anyone else)
know of an AMIGA driver for the Nikon Coolscan 35mm slide scanner ?
Thanks in advance,

The "traditional" relationship between developer and distributor is that
the developer wants as much cash immediately as he can get. The
distributor wants to pay as little as possible as long from now as
possible and wants to spend as little as possible.
I think the way to change the US market might be to have a trusted
(trustable) distributor. If you had someone you could send X copies of
your software or hardware to knowing that they would try hard to sell
them, promptly pay you for anything they had sold, and return anything
they couldn't sell in a reasonable amount of time (only infrequently —
they'd make good reasonable forcasts of excatly how many they could sell),
maybe you could do buisness with a distributor very differently from how
you do now. The distributor would become more like your representative in
a different country than a buyer and reseller of your stuff. He'd take a
smaller cut, but wouldn't be advancing cash.
I've been annoyed by some of the stories and problems I've heard about
between the developers and distributors and dealers. I've been thinking
about how I might change it.
I wonder if I set up as a new kind of distributor like outlined above
whether developers would want to work with me…

Yes, always take what distributors say with a grain of salt. American Software,
MicroPace's arch-rival, sent out press releases to a bunch of people telling
them that American had the exclusive rights to PageStream3. This is not true
and we had to send out counter faxes. Plus American stopped carrying some
products from a company called SoftLogic Solutions (a PC company) and all their
dealers got worried that we had gone out of business. Their salesmen aren't
well-informed.

Their salespeople are not well-informed, and they're eager to blabber their
ignorance to the world as the gospel truth, and there are dealers out there who
are gullible enough to believe them. There, have I offended everyone yet? 🙂
