A little while ago I placed a question reagarding the use of Hierarchy and dummy objects, someone replied, but I can't find that reply 🙁 Here is the question again: If I wanted the head of a man to follow a camera motion as the camera flew around that man, but did not want the camera to look at the man's head directly, what would I need to do to accomplish this? I have tried linking the head to a dummy object and have the dummy object link to the camera, but the camera cannot be a "parent" object to the dummy object. I then tried to create a new path which follows the camera path and attach dummy #2 to it, then linked dummy #1 to it as the child object. Well this worked, except that now the head (which is attached to dummy #1) flies clean off the body when dummy #2 starts on its path. Now, is there a way to anchor dummy #1 so that it only pivots when following the motion of dummy #2? I'm really losing my head over this one, so please, any thoughts are appreciated. James Franssen

James, Here's all that I could find : << Link the camera to the dudes head and then swivel the head around and you'll get the effect you describe. >> << You could link the camera to the guy's head but this kind of locks the whole thing down. What I would do is link a Dummy object to the neck, and then the Headto the dummy, ant the camera (Target and Loaction) to the dummy as well. Then you can swivel the dummy about (moving both camera and head), and still independently rotate the camera or head. Hope this makes sense. >> BILL

Thanks Bill, that is what I was looking for, only I don't think this solves my problem, I still don't know how to keep the head attached to the body. If anyone can help, thanks. James Franssen

NECK DUMMY HEAD CAM

<<NECK DUMMY HEAD CAM>> If I use this structure, my head will not follow the camera. Granted, the camera will go where the head turns, but I need it the other way around. I have the camera already on a path, and for a more realistic look, I want the head to follow the camera, besides, it is easier this way than to move the head around and then go back and rotate and roll the camera. Maybe this isn't even possible. Anyone at YOST know if this can be done? How come a camera cannot be a parent? Thanks. James Franssen

I'm currently experiencing major file handling problems with my Navigator software. My intent was to dig up your previously posted replies, and then clarify the heirarchy – that's all. I cannot find your original request for help, so I really don't know what you're trying to do or why. If you still haven't figured out a solution, you can tell me exactly what you're trying to accomplish, and I'll try to help (if CsNav gets me the message <g>). If you looking for dynamically changing heirarchial relationships though, you can't do it.

M.G. >> major file handling problems with my Navigator software Did you try Rebuild Indexes under the CSNav Special pulldown? John

Yes, about 10 times a day ! After your helping me get CsNav beta going, I have used it for months with only a few problems. Then I finally installed the release version the other day, and have had umpteen problems. I know these are not unique to me, as there must be a thousand irate messages on the CsNav forum, documenting all the problems I'm experiencing. I've started (today) d/l message summaries and marking rather than just getting all the forum messages, which is what I want – and this seems to help minimize the problems – but is a real pain. I'm pretty familiar with this s/w now, and have employed all the known "fixes" & workarounds. It really pisses me off to see garbage s/w, especially when the beta wasn't bad, but to hear some of the BS their support staff is feeding customers – well, it's unforgivable. Do you know if there's any way to get the beta version BACK again ?

Funny, about you're CsNav problems (not funny… just "funny"). I was having problems with the Beta software, and since installing the final release I've had absolutely ZERO problems (I think <g>). PC's… who can figure them out?

You're the ONLY one then. Take a look at their support forum – unbelievable.

Bill, I use mostly the release version of CSNav, and have had *no* problems; haven't ever even had to rebuild the indexes, and that's with downloading *all* the messages from ACAD and ASOFT for the last several months. (Definitely don't save session files, though, if you don't want your load to take a few minutes <g>.) I don't think it will solve your problems, but I've still got DISK1 and DISK2 of the pre-release if you really want them. John

Hi John, Hmmmm. No, I don't save sessions other than as temp. back-ups, and I don't boot with last session displayed. If you check out the CsNav support forum, you'll see hundreds of other folks having the same problems as I had been having. Since I started d/l summaries first and marking for retrieval, I don't think I've had any problems – I'd rather just grab all the messages 1st pass though as I always did with the pre-release version. BTW, when I Host Deleted a few of my messages the other day (Nav lost them, not in out-basket, then they spit out in an u/l during a session), CsNav managed to delete SOMEONE ELSE'S message as well (???). Anyway, let's see what happens the next few days with me d/l summaries first – and then I might actually want to get those disks from you if problems re-occur. Thanks for the offer.

Bill- how long does it take, usually, to d/l all the messages @9600? Or can you d/l at 14.4? Thanks. Also, what does Host delete do, in comparison to regular delete? What are the benefits? BTW- I have no troubles with my CSNAV 1.0, but mark the summaries I want first. JNJ

Camera's can't be parents because they don't have the same type of transformations that objects do. (that's also why they can't be rotated or scaled, btw) – G

Great, thanks guys. You have helped a bit, this is just polishing up my ability (or maybe *inability*) to work-around. Let me see what else I can ask to keep you guys humming. James Franssen

James, >> Now, is there a way to anchor dummy #1 so that it only pivots when following the motion of dummy #2? << make dummy #1 child to dummy #2.

<< <<Now, is there a way to anchor dummy #1 so that it only pivots when following the motion of dummy #2?>> >> << make dummy #1 child to dummy #2 >> I think this is closer.. if I anchor Dummy #1to the neck, then I can see where this will work for this method of creating a new path so a new dummy can follow. But it would be so much easier if the camera could become a parent. Oh well. Thanks. James Franssen

James, >> But it would be so much easier if the camera could become a parent. Oh well. << I haven't found this too limiting. With a little pre-planning I can usually come up with a nice arrangement of dummies to do the trick.

Gentlemen, Am I missing something here? Why can't James just have a dummy object assume the path of the camera, and link the camera to that dummy. That way he could also link the head to that same dummy, effectively accomplishing what he so very much wants to do (which is link the head to the camera).
