The problem lies with the Windows MCI-CDAudio driver. When accessing data
the Texel runs at double speed (that's how it can reach a 330K xfer rate),
when playing audio it automatically slows down to "normal" speed. The time
that it takes to actually make the change can reach a full second or more.
The result is that the MCI driver reports an error (usually) or Windows
thinks the driver is not installed because it get's no response to the
call. I have not had any success with "mixed" CDs either.

Thanks for the information. Texel is "looking into it" for me. They
acted like it should not be a problem to access mixed CDs and said they would
get back to me "shortly". (That was last week). I'll let you know if they
come up with anything useful, but your explanation makes a lot of sense.
With more double speed drives on the market I would think Microsoft would
update their driver.

I have been able to access mixed CD's only by first accessing the disk with
an audio CD player I have that does not use the MCI driver. The programmer
wrote his own Windows routine to access MSCDEX directly. This kicks the
unit down to "normal" speed. Unfortunately, after a few data accesses, it
speeds back up again. Microsoft has fixed this problem in NT – at least I
have not seen it happen there – so maybe a new MCI driver is not too far
off!

Are you using a Texel 5024 under NT? Mine locks up a lot while under NT.
What type of controler are you using?
