#I screwed up bad…

Hi
I am new to the Amiga world and I have made a terrible error. While trying to
erase some files from a floppy, I accidently deleted all the files in the dh0:
directory of the Amiga 2000 at work. It has the Toaster attached. I've at
least lost all the icons for the drawers and such. What I need to know is,
what files are normally in the root directory of the hard drive and how can I
replace them?
Thank you very much for any help you can give me!
John
The files are still on your disk. When you tell the computer to delete
files the computer simply sets a bit on the disk which means the space on
the disk where the files reside can now be over written. You can recover
the files but DON'T WRITE ANYTHING to the disk until you do so since you
may overwrite some of the files you want to recover.
There are many programs which will let you recover files. QuarterBack
Tools, AmiBack Tools are a couple of commercial examples, but there are
also shareware programs. I'm not sure of the names of any of the
shareware programs. Maybe a sysop can help you with that.

Andrew,
Thanks for your reply. I think I may have written over some of them already =>
I copied the icons for CLI and such off a floppy onto the harddisk, because
there was no way to access the programs at all with out it. I am definitely
going to see if I can get a copy of one of the utilitiy packages you mentioned.
Unfortunately downloading shareware won't help because my home computer is a PC
and the Amiga only has 1.3 Kickstart and Workbench and I understand those
versions won't read MS-DOS disks. Oh, the adventures! <G>
Thanks for your help,
John
Download the software with your PC and do one of the following things:
1. Get yourself a copy of 'CrossDos' with which you can read MS-DOS disks, 2.
See someone with a BridgeBoard, with that you can transfer files between
Amiga- and PC-DOS
BTW: You probably have overwritten some of the data, but if you have copied
ICONS only it can't be much (an icon is very small) so: give that a try.
Quarterback Tools scans the harddisk and locates every erased file on it. Then
you can select which files to recover.
MaRiO. "I like my Porsche, but I _LOVE_ my Amiga!"
The program will look at the disk and see which files are recoverable and
then ask you which ones you want to recover. You never know, you may get
lucky and find out that the important files are recoverable.

John:
A freely distributable program I found to undelete files is called ARestaure.
It's worked with everything I've thrown at it so far.
I'm not sure if it's in the forums here. If you can't find it through AmigaFF,
let me know, and I'll send a copy up.
Paul
Thanks Paul,
I was under a bit of pressure to get things straightened up quickly, so I went
out and bought a used version of Quarterback Tools. It found a few files that
it restored, but I still don't have the icons for the drawers. Is there a way
to recreate them?
I know the icons on the desktop in Windows are actually present in each program
directory and Windows uses an ASCII file to locate each icon and place it in
the appropriate window. Is it similar in AmigaDOS? How do I recreate my icons
and drawers?
Thanks for your help,
John
Using the CLI or shell, you can type DIR to get a list of all files and
directories on your hard drive. Make a note of the names of the directories for
which there should be drawers (some directories which are not intended to be
accessed from Workbench, like c or devs for example, don't require drawers). If
you are running AmigaDos 1.3, you can simply copy the drawer called 'Empty',
using the menu command. Then, rename the drawer to the directory's name you
want it to refer to. This is done with the rename command (also in the
menu).Thereafter, the new drawer SHOULD show any .info files its directory
contains. (.info files are the files which contain the image and position of an
icon). It's been awhile since I used 1.3, so I'm telling you this from memory.
There's a slight chance I'm remembering it wrong, and you may also need to
temporarily rename the directory so as not to conflict with the drawer name.
Then you copy all the files from the directory to the drawer. Try the first way
and if that doesn't work, you can leave me e-mail with your phone number, and I
can talk you through it as you do the work. Hope this helps!
