I am trying to apply a GIF as the material for an object using 3DS v1.01. In the materials editor, I select Texture Map at 100%, and select my GIF file. However, it does not apply itself to the object. It appears fine in the sample rendering in the Materials Editor, but no colors appear at all on the object when I render. However, if I take the same GIF and make a reflective map, I do get colors… of course, they seem to be a reflection of other materials in the scene. It seems obvious to me, that I am missing a step. Any suggestions? I just want to lay a GIF down to "paint" the object.

Chris, I believe you need to apply mapping coord's and then the map itself in the Editor. BILL

I am applying it (unless there is some sort of Assigning that I am missing). And I do get something if I include a reflective map. In the editor I am using the Assign | Object. Maybe I am misunderstaning what you mean by mapping coordinates… I am only assigning the map to objects. Also, this is not a problem with materials that do not include texture maps… which leads me to believe that's where I am missing the boat. –chris

Unless your material uses procedural textures or reflection maps, you need to assign coordinates using one of the mapping methods. The former doesn't require coord's, and would render. BILL

chris: in 3d editor you have to do thefollowing steps for tex. mapped objects. remember a reflection map is not a tex.map, so you dont need to do the following to reflection mapped objects! 1)in the 3d edit, choose surface/ mapping /type. choose the type of mapping you want. 2)in the editor windows a map icon will appear. adjust its size and orientation for the object. 3)in the 3d edit, choose surface, MAPPING/apply/object. and then clik on the object. 4)in 3d edit, choose surface material choose. pick the material. 5)in 3dedit, choose surface/ material/ apply/ object. click on object. ara

Chris, << I am trying to apply a GIF as the material for an object using 3DS v1.01.>> Have you gone through the tutorials yet? If not, I'd suggest that you do and then ask. jonas[adesk]

Jonas, I understand the RTFM sentiment, and I agree. I did work through the tutorials that (I thought) applied to materials and applying them (redbrick.cel, etc) but don't recall it mentioning the steps suggested by one of the users here. Haven't had a chance to try his steps, but they look like the ticket. At any rate, just wanted to say that I'm following your advice… I must have missed those steps in the tutorial.
