#cubic mapping?

A quick wish that just came to me… how about a cubic mapper? Sure we
have planar, cylidrical and spherical (and lofted and face)… but
there are many times when I could really have done with the ability
to planar map to all sides of an object – like a building say – in
one go, without having to divide the object into north, south east
west, up and down faces. Sure, one has IPAS materials and face
mapping, but a cubic/block map would be just one more way for 3DS to
be even better… Thoughts?
Peter, you can do that and more in 3DS. Check your manual for box
mapping, cubic reflection mapping, etc..

Thanks for the comments. We have been using release 3 for some time…
Let me think of an example to illustrate my point… We recently had
a client for our renderfarm service who had produced a complex
building model. (he was an architect) and wanted it animating to
video. – The model was an impressive, if complex, piece of work with
much of the surface detail, such as stonework, steps, archways and
pillars being fully modelled. The surface material was uniform
sandstone-ish texture with a subtle combination of texture and bump
maps. Faces ranged from little tiny ones to great big enormous ones,
so face mapping was out. An .SXP would have been fine – but he hadn't
chosen one… Time was against us, so we had to make do with planar
mapping from the front…(otherwise we would have selected groups of
faces pointing in each direction and mapped them separately). If we
had had cubic (or box?) mapping, we could have applied a simple bump
map to all sides of the building at once, very quickly, knowing we
would have had a pretty reasonable result, whatever angle the model
was viewed from. Think of staircases – how can you quickly map both
the treads and the risers? (with stair carpet for example?) I know
such a mapping mode would be really useful to us – of course I may
just be really stupid and can't see a really obvious solution within
the program as it is now….

Peter, as I told you the other day – and now that you've confirmed you have
Release 3 – THERE IS a box map function and surprisingly it's called BOX
MAPPING. Check it out in your manual.

mapping do I have an early release? Ta for the help – guessed there
would be a solution….
you have to make sure that you have release "3" of 3dstudio. it is
not incuded in release 1 or 2 , but i remember seeng a freeware ipas
in this forum that offered box mapping as an ipas. i saw this before
r3 came out. maybee it is still here. search the libs for public
domain or freeware ipas's. it should be there?! ara

It's in the software dev kits section of the libs in a file called IPAS21.zip.
When pkunzipped there will be included in the many files a mapbox.c,
mapbox_[i|w].axp
and a good readme.doc.

p 7-125 in the ref manual. It's not exactly what your looking for, but it
should help some. You may still need to create multiple materials with various
uv scale/offset or possibly 90 degree map rotations.

If you have Release 3, in the Reference Manual index, you'll find:
Box command, 3D Editor, Surface Material, 7-124
which will lead you to a full description of the command.

You can use the box mapping feature under surface/material/box… in the 3d
editor.
