#Problem w/ ATI & Vibrant
9 messages in this thread
I just received my upgrade of 3DS from release 2.01a to 3.0a. I
have a ATI Graphics Ultra Plus with 2 mb of memory.
When I configured the vibrant driver for the ATI Graphics Ultra
Plus at 640 x 480 x 16.7m colors for the rendering portion and tried
to render a mesh file, there were many black spots on the rendering
and sometimes it locked up with chunks of the image missing. The
same problem also happens when I use the command RENDERER\VIEW\IMAGE.
I also used the same driver configuration for the Material Editor
and when I switched to this module and tried to move the cursor up to
the top menu bar it locked up with chunks of the screen missing on
the top part.
Both of these problems do not occur if I configure the display in
the Material Editor and the rendering portion for the ATI Graphics
Ultra Plus at 640 x 480 x 65,000 colors.
Is this problem related to 3DS, the drivers, or my graphics card
and how should I correct this?
I'm going to have to defer to Jonas Ruikis and the other hardware
experts that are on the forum for this one, Mark. You've got a
conflict going between the drivers, your card, and 3DS. Since there
are many other folks here using that same card, I'm certain that
you'll be fine once the conflict is sussed out.

There have been updates to the Vibrant drivers since the product was
manufactured. My first suggestion would be to download the latest drivers. The
file is called VIB3DS.zip and is found in the 3D Studio section of the lib. Pay
attention to pg 66-73 of the installation manual. After doing this, see if the
problem dissappears. If not, post your current situation and we'll jump back
in.

Mark,

In addition to my previous comment, I was wondering if you had the
Render-Options-Video Color Check set to ON ond if your Method was set to FLAG
which will render hot pixels as black?

Jonas,
I did download VIB3DS.ZIP and it gave me the same problems. I checked on the
VIDEO COLOR CHECK option and it was set to NO. I also read p.66-73 of the
installation manual and decided to try the VESA mode.
The results of the material editor were
Slower material rendering
Only 1 mat sample boxes was in color at a time, I would much prefer to have all
of the boxes in color at once
The results for rendering were
When the rendered image is about to be displayed the message box "Computing
colors, Stand by" appears for a second. Does this mean that the image is being
converted to 16 or 8 bit color? When the image does come up it appears very
slowly, how can I correct this?
Also I'm still not convinced it is rendering in 24 bit color. Is there any
test I can do to see that it is rendering in 24 bit color?

But is sounds like the banding is gone? If there is a bug, they should
find it. Vibrant has improved the drivers many times already. Have
you tried selecting the chipset family found at the bottom 3ds vibcfg
list?
Mark, I have the ATI Graphics Ultra + in one of my system and it works fine. It
sounds as if you have just selected the 8-bit vibrant displays. Mine renders
fine at 640×480 24 bit (even in the materials editor, all the balls remain
colored at the same time).

Ron,
is this the Ron I know and abused, oops, I mean worked with back in the old
days. What are you doing now you son of a gun? And who's Virtual Designs Group?
There are some problems with the 1.0.2 version of the Mach64 support. Some of
the Mach64 DACs don't respond correctly to the command to set them to 8-bit
color depth, and many of the modes appear dim or incorrectly colored.
1.0.3 should be out soon, try it out with this version and see if it corrects
your problem.
