Hi,
Anybody out there got 3DS Mesh file(s) of
the Platonic solids, please?
Dodecahedron
Icosahedron
Or any of the Kepler-Poinsot polyhedra?
Small Stellated Decahedron
Great Dodecahedron
Great Stellated Dodecahedron
Great Icosahedron
I need them for a project I am doing and thought
there was no need to re-invent the wheel.

You can create any of those — and many more using HEDRA2. It comes in Disk 7
of the new IPAS routines through Yost Group. There's a running demo in DL1.
Look for HEDRA2.ZIP.

I'm not sure if they're still here, but a few months ago, I put .3DS
files of both a dodecahedron and icosahedron up here, (it was before
HEDRA came out). I can't remember what the filenames were, but a
search on some of the more obvious ones might turn up something.

In addition to picking the above, you can play with parameters to
produce variations until your brain is tesselated. As Jack
mentioned, all this and more on the IPAS disk 7 – highly recommended.
Displace is pretty fun with the RT shading too, huh ? I've dynamically
created a number of objects that just couldn't be constructed in
other ways (or you wouldn't want to, let's put it that way). Using
specially-designed bitmap "tools" , you can really carve/pull away on
a hi-res mesh with good results.

Some amazing posibilities with this one. I made some fantastic
morphing monstrosities with a random spherical map "pusher". So many
posibilities, so little time…
BTW, did you see the article on CyberMesh, a Photoshop plug-in that
does bitmap displacement modeling (NewMedia, June, pg 89)? They
report an interesting hole-cutting option which allows black pixels
to cut holes in the mesh. They said the renderer was "exceptionally
fast", but noted that it was "fun to watch the shaded preview build
from the back to the front". <g>

Ain't it the truth, especially the last part. I don't think I saw that
article, but then again, I can't remember what I did yesterday <g>.
WATCHING things render is definitely not my idea of fun <g>….wake

books and try to understand all this. I've got a feeling that this
has something to do with the meaning of life.
Hey, no need for books. Dan explains it all in the docs. (I asked him
for that section because I had no idea what I was writing about.)
In addition to what everyone else said, there's a fully-functional
(but non-interactive) version of Hedra1 up in DL1 somewhere. But
Hedra2 is sooo much more fun!
Around Christmas an IPAS routine called HEDRA.PXP was uploaded to the
forum by Daniel Silva as a Christmas gift to us all. Hopefully it is
still available (and it's free, unlike HEDRA2). I only just got
around to playing with it this week, and it builds them things quite
well, tho' not as well as HEDRA2 does, since you can't see your
object until you click on OK in the dialogue box. If you can't find
it drop me a byte and I'll send it to you (it's freely distributable,
but not to be resold).
