I've never created a wallpaper (yet) but have some goofy ideas I'd like to try.
Is there any publication, shareware, FAQ, or whatever that will give a novice
wallpaper builder some insight on how to build/test his/her designs?

What you really need is software that will "wrap" the mouse from one edge to
the opposite edge. What this means is if you draw a line from left to right,
let's say, as the mouse goes past the right edge, the mouse cursor should wrap
back to the left edge and continue. Same goes for top and bottom.
I don't know if there are any shareware program that do this, but Fractal
Design Painter does. Also, Kai's Power Tools produces tileable images
(although it doesn't have the interactive wrapping feature).

PMJI, but i recommend the works of (and about) M.C. Escher who really knew his
tilable patterns.

I absolutely agree. He's one of my all-time favorite artists. But we don't
really want to use his works. We're looking for new art, new talent, new
ideas. Nothing wrong with Escher's stuff — it's just that it's all been seen
before.

Wasn't meaning to suggest that people scan and _submit_ Escher's work to you
— just that it is a great source of _inspiration_ and ideas about tilable art.

I love Escher's work, but seriously… I just wanted a simple reference to how
one uses any particular program to create a tiled (or otherwise constructed)
wallpaper. I'd also like to know if there's a way to change colors on those
wallpapers provided by MS, CPS and others?

Mike, I use Photoshop to create a tiled wallpaper. Start with a tile of your
design. Then use the Offset filter at a setting of half the width in pixels and
half the length in pixels. Then work on the design so that no seams are
visible. Voila! A tile that can now be used as a seamfree pattern.
As far as changing colors, in Photoshop it's done by using the Image Adjust
Hue option and messing around til you get a color or combination that pleases
you.

Actually, Mike, I've been doing a bunch of wallpaper tiles the past few days.
After I saw your messages, it occurred to me that such might be the perfect
opportunity to get acquainted with HSC's Convolver. It's been a great deal of
fun, especially when I start from handmade designs. So now, instead of playing
FreeCell while I download during my sysop (dtpforum, adobeapp) duties, I make
wallpaper.

Thanks for the tip! I don't have Photoshop (yet) but plan on buying a FB
scanner very soon and almost every ad I've seen bundles PS LE with it and that
means an easy upgrade. I just bought Deke McClellan's PS Bible 3.0 which
should give me a good primer on using PS. In the interim, I do have
Micrographix Picture Publisher and Corel 5… can I use these?

I'm sure you can do the same thing with Picture Publisher and/or Corel Paint,
but don't know what the exact commands are called. And a plug for Fractal
Design Painter: it has an automatic method of creating seamless tiles while
you're painting! For me, at least, it's not a replacement for Photoshop, but a
wonderful addition.

Seamless tiles: Open a new file. Select all. Choose Tools, Patterns, Capture
Pattern. A new file will open. When you paint into it, it will wrap around as
you hit an edge–thus creating a seamless pattern when that file is used to
make a tile.

of it, but now that you said it, it's so obvious! -David 🙂
