#GPFax won't send

I am having trouble with my GPFax trying to send. I'm not sure what exactly it
is. After connection, it tries to send the page "Sending 01/01 Std", then
gives me "unexpected serial" and finally "line error". I do not know exatcly
what I am doing but really want my FAX to work. Any help would be greatly
appreciated…

Could you give some more information, which GPFax version you have, your modem
make and model, which installation did you use (Generic or for a specific
model), anything which would help to pin point the problem?

I have version 2.01 2/5/95. I tried to update with the patch found here, but I
get the message incorrect version of original file or something of the like. I
have a Reveal 14.4 modem which works fine in Data mode. I believe Generic
installation was the one installed.

The current version is 2.347. You still didn't give much information regarding
your setup. Does your modem support Class 1 or Class 2, or both. What's your
serial setting? Which tooltypes are set in GPFax, what's the init string (GPFax
environment), and do you have a 7wire cable?

My modem supports Class 1-3 Faxes. My serial setting is serial.device device
#0. I have no tooltypes set (I assume thats when I go to the information
screen for the icon). My Init string, as supplied my the modem manufacturer is
ATE10&C1&D2S0=0. I am not sure what you mean by a seven-wire cable. I have
the cable coming out of my serial port which connects to another cable that
connects to my modem. I did this in lieu of a gender changer mainly because I
did not have one nor could I get in in Germany when I was there. I do add that
the modem portion works excellent.

I think you're confusing CLASS and GROUP when it comes to fax software.
GROUP runs 1-3, CLASS is only 1 or 2 (last I heard). So when you say your
modem supports class 1-3, I belive you're looking at the wrong information.
Group refers to how the fax is compressed and sent, Class refers to
where the "work" is done…in software in your computer (Class 1) or in your
modem (Class 2).

Thans. You are right…
You are confusing the term Group with Class. There is only Class 1 and 2. The
reason why I am asking is that Class 1 modems usually send/receive faxes using
XON/XOFF, while Class 2 use RTS/CTS handshaking.
I would recommend that you reinstall GPFax after checking your modem manual
regarding the Class it supports and follow the installation procedure in GPFax
accordingly. Then try to run the program and make sure that there are no other
comms programs running which might access the serial.device. Let me know what
happens.
BTW, your modem init string seems dodgy. Try AT&FE0V1X4&K3C1&D2S0=0 if your
modem is Class2.
7wire cable is required if you use RTS/CTS handshaking.

I doubt your modem supports class 3 as it isn't even out of committee yet as a
standard and I doubt it ever will. You probably mean Group III which described
the T.x methods in communication between fax devices (not just modems). Most
modems are either class 1 or 2 or both which describes the extended AT command
set for fax. With faxing, make sure that your gender changer passes through
ALL pins and that your other cable is a h/w handshaking cable with at least the
basic 7 wires passed through. Many modem cables are only 3 wire and do not
support h/w handshaking properly.
