Don, Can't remember the exact price of the XDS — pretty pricey for a case, cable, and little circuit board, like about $70. But it's pretty, it's small, and it brings power out of the case so I didn't have to add the cost of a power supply to the equation. I remember someone about a year ago reporting finding the adaptor cable they needed from an ad in Computer Shopper, from one of the hard drive manufacturers.

Denny, The XDS system is nice, except it's the reason why my Cobra 28 won't work on my A1200. Have the XDS completely removed, and the Cobra 28 will actualy work like a charm. With the XDS in there… oh boy! When I can afford the Ferret SCSI option and a external SCSI unit, the XDS is going to be sold. // Christian – AP 1.80 \X/ Only Amiga Makes It Possible

Chris, Thanks for the info & warning… My friend is on a fixed income, so I need all the input I can get! Don Suhr

Don, No problem at all. I don't want to have anyone going through some of the problems I had trying to find out what was going wrong. // Christian – AP 1.80 \X/ Only Amiga Makes It Possible

Don, Christian's problem is very likely due to overstressing his power supply. If your friend's 1200 came with the A600 power supply, then it's likely that a power supply for the XDS or a bigger supply for the Amiga will be needed if he ever wants to add an internal expansion board.

Denny, Thanks for the info… I'm using the box that I originally bought a SCSI tape drive in for the drive, so it has it's own power supply, thank heavens… I've heard that the 12's have problems when you start running lots of devices off of the undersized A600 PS (which his did come with). I have an XDS and the CSA 12-Guage 33Mhz and do not have a problem (I have a Quantum 520MB HD in the XDS) Is the Cobra the DKB board? You may be running out of juice if you are using the A1200 stock power supply with the Cobra and the XDS. I use an external power supply for the XDS. Rick, The Cobra is the DKB board. I've been running the system with an Bigfoot power supply since I got the Cobra so I don't know if it's that. And I've plugged the HD in the XDS directly up to the Bigfoot and still no go. // Christian – AP 1.80 \X/ Only Amiga Makes It Possible

Well, that pretty much does it then. The only problems I have had was mixing the Quantum drive with an internal 2.5 inch Conner 120MB HD. Those two together on the same bus are a no-go. Good luck on fixing that problem. Now on the Internet with Compuserve and PPP Rick Green Via AP1.80

Just my luck I suppose! Arrgh! // Christian – AP 1.80 \X/ Only Amiga Makes It Possible

I believe I read in another post that you also have an internal hard drive. If you do, have you tried disconnecting it and using just the XDS? I had to do this because the external Quantum and the internal Conner did not like each other (The computer would not recognize the Conner and the Quantum was garbled, no matter who was set for Master/Slave). Rick, I haven't tried that possibility yet here, so I'll go ahead and try to do that and see what happens. I have an ST-9145AG as my internal and a Connor 240MB as an external. I'll let you know what happens. // Christian – AP 1.80 \X/ Only Amiga Makes It Possible

Christian, The XDS is compatible with the Cobra — I'm using the XDS in my A1200 with a Mongoose (same as your Cobra 28 except running at 50MHz) and Ferrett SCSI board. I'd guess your problem is likely that your Amiga's power supply can't handle the XDS and accelerator simultaneously. (I'm using an A500 supply on my 1200.) Have you tried using a power supply for the XDS? I'd imagine that getting the XDS supply or a Bigfoot supply for your 1200 would fix your problem.

Denny, Hmmm thats interesting. I do own a Bigfoot power supply for my A1200, so I'm not using a stock power supply. But I still can't get the system to work with the Cobra and the XDS. Expansion Systems and DKB were pulling out their hair on this one. Any suggestions? // Christian – AP 1.80 \X/ Only Amiga Makes It Possible
#194832From: Denny AtkinApr 27, 1995 10:54 AM
Christian, Have you tried the XDS without the accelerator in the system, just to make sure it works okay? The XDS is really just an extension of the Amiga's internal IDE controller, so there shouldn't be any incompatibilities. All I could figure would be bad power, or a bad/faulty connection.
#194842From: Christian ElkjerApr 27, 1995 11:59 AM
Denny, I completely removed the XCDs system so that the only drive was the internal HD and the Cobra board worked without a flaw. But as soon as I plugged in the XDS drive cable, no go there. Possibly the problem is the XDS power/drive cable? // Christian – AP 1.80 \X/ Only Amiga Makes It Possible

I heard that the Bigfoot power supplies were hardly better than the original power pack. Might be me getting it wrong :-). Just because it says more watts, doesn't mean they will all make it down the cable. Also some extra power supplies only give more juice on +5, -5 or +12 (think thats the voltages) and not ALL of them. If you are pulling a heavy load off of 12v and you only have extra 5vs then it ain't going to work. Phill

Phill, Well, I could always plug in my old A300 power supply and run my A1200/ Cobra 28 off of that while the XDS is deriving power from the BigFoot and seeing if that helps any at all. What do you think? // Christian – AP 1.80 \X/ Only Amiga Makes It Possible

It cannot hurt to give it a try. Wait a minute, A300? Phill
