Yes, there is an exlanation in the 3.2 doc, but I still had some
trouble until someone (Charles Blaquiere on IML?) explained to me
that you need to be careful with irregular shapes, so that you don't
create faces that go outside your shape. I just put a message about
this into another thread to Douglas Beard. Any relation?

With irregular shapes, like an ampersand (&), people need to build the shape in
sections… or just use the Spline editor, of course.

What are you having difficulty with? There've been several messages recently
that touched on how it's used. Where are you getting stuck?
Here, do this….add a sphere. Enter points mode. Pick DRAG BOX
selection method. Shift select the middle three cross-sections.
Delete them. Now enter edge mode. Shift select the bottom
cross-section of the top hemisphere. Select SET EDGE LINE. Now
Shift select the top cross-section of the bottom hemisphere. Select
FILL TO EDGE LINE. This will connect the two hemispheres with faces.
This is a simple example, but it shows you how it works. The real
power here is in that it's not necessary for the two edges you're
going to connect to have the same point count as is necessary with
the SKIN function. This SET/FILL EDGE LINE is also usefull in facing
holes in object geometry.

PMFJI on this long serries of threads, and for revealing my oun laziness, but I
think what I was hoping to see or wanting to find in this fill feature is a
three dimensional smooth that will remove the very obvious seams that often
ocurr when intersecting objects to build an object for boning. I.e., we, or at
least, I, was hoping to find a magic wand to assemble limbs in bone figures
without getting "Star Wars action figure/Barby/ GI Joe" type joint lines…
perhaps a way to tighten up the skin to lessen the discontinuity…
I perceive that this still is a manual process of 2D point adjustment with
smooth.

This can be achieved to some degree by adding faces between cross-sections, but
it's not the cure-all. You'd have to use SMOOTH EDGE LINE quite a bit to do
this. For instance, as a test I converted a 6 sided sphere to a perfect 24
sided sphere by using fracture on the object a couple of times, and then SMOOTH
EDGE LINE for each cross-section. However, no matter how you slice it, <g>,
it's pretty much a manual thing for now.

Here's where another beginner might help. I had trouble because I didn't
DEselect my first edge line before selecting the second. I kept getting the
error message that some edges were in both sets. It's implict in your
directions above, but if you keep the shift down between the two selections,
you'll have a problem. Perhaps this is Darin's problem, but maybe not.

Well, sort of. I was selecting too many edges. I thought I was to MAKE EDGE
LINE on both sets of edges and then fill between them. Now I understand that I
just need to SET EDGE LINE with one set of edges and (after deselecting the
edge line) select edges that I would like to fill from to the EDGE LINE set
previously. Well, you know what I mean. <g> I have got the hang of it know.

Thanks for pointing that out. You're right, someone may not realize that the
first edge selection should be de-selected. I'll try to remember this, and be
a little more specific when outlining steps that involve selections.
